What a “Devine” Young Man: Connor Devine ’18

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

Name: Connor Devine

Year: Freshman

Dorm: Fisher

Hometown: Valparaiso, Indiana

Major: Economics for the time being

Activities: Investment Club, Economics Club

Favorite book that isn’t by Tolkien: That’s an unfair question. To Kill a Mockingbird. (Author’s Note: There was a fifteen minute conversation in between those two sentences that could not be included.)

Favorite movie: My favorite movie changes a lot, but for now 12 Years a Slave for drama, The Big Lebowski for comedy.

Favorite directors: The Coen Brothers

Hogwarts House: I never really got into Harry Potter, but I’ve been told I’d be a Ravenclaw.

Wait, how did you never get into Harry Potter? I read the first book and it just seemed really juvenile.

Myers-Briggs Test: INTJ

Favorite Superhero: The entire Guardians of the Galaxy, but Star-Lord specifically.

Favorite TV Show: Parks and Rec for comedy, The West Wing for drama

Something weird about you: I don’t like chocolate.

And now for some Christmas-themed questions!

What is your favorite Christmas movie? Home Alonem because it’s all about the power of the youth, man. It’s good because it’s about how kids are more capable than adults give them credit for, and that’s something that people tend to forget, especially today. People tend to baby their children, and I thought it was awesome that he was able to survive on his own.

Favorite Christmas Song? I like “Carol of the Bells” a lot. I don’t like Trans-Siberian Orchestra. I know a lot of people do, but I don’t like that they try to make Christmas music more like rock. Christmas music has a very specific sound and the addition of electric guitar and undermines the Christmas spirit.

What is the best Christmas present you’ve ever gotten? A hug from my father. Just kidding. I got The Hobbit from my dad this past year.

What’s your favorite holiday tradition? When my entire extended family falls asleep right after Christmas dinner. Also my roommate and I decorated our dorm room this year. That was a good time because I am a Jehovah’s Witness and we don’t celebrate anything ever. Ever. Totally kidding, I’m Catholic.

When did you stop believing in Santa? I stopped believing in Santa in 2nd or 3rd grade, but my mom didn’t actually tell me until 4th grade. I stopped believing in him because I noticed a barcode and a pricetag on my Mario Dance Dance Revolution and I realized that didn’t make sense because Santa wouldn’t need to use money.

Favorite Winter Animal: Black capped chickadees because they’re super cute.

Favorite Christmas Food: The ricotta cookies that my grandma makes, although I don’t think ricotta cheese is actually involved in any way. Hot chocolate is my favorite drink.

What do you want for Christmas this year? Mariah Carey, because apparently she wants me. But seriously, I asked my mom for all three Blu-Ray Extended Edition Lord of the Rings movies.

Worst things about winter? I like snow, but I hate the sound of walking on snow that’s already been packed down. I can’t describe the sensation of that feeling, but it’s horrible.

Thanks, Connor!
