Ladies, I am here to introduce you to my absolute favorite makeup trick. This is a technique of applying eyeliner that is a fool-proof way to make your eyes look BIGGER and your lashes look FULLER all without looking like you’re wearing a ton of makeup! What is this magic technique you ask? I give you: tightlining. Also known as invisible eye liner, this is quickly becoming one of the most popular tricks of makeup artists everywhere. In a nutshell, when applying your eyeliner you will apply it to the water line on the eyelid underneath your eyelashes and inside the lash line. Check out the how-to!
Step 1: Choose the right eyeliner. As expected, it’s a good idea to use waterproof eyeliner when trying this trick, since it will be on your water line and more prone to disappearing throughout the day. Try using a kohl-based liner because it’s formulated to hold better in the wet area of your eye.
My favorites:
Rimmel London Exaggerate Waterproof Eye Definer – Walgreens, $6
Smashbox Always Shark Waterproof Kohl Liner – Sephora, $20
Step 2: Line your top water line. Gently lift the top of your eyelid (i.e. pull up on the skin under your eyebrow) and apply your eyeliner to the water line underneath your lash line. Trace back and forth under the lashes a few times.
Step 3: Darken the roots of your top lashes. This is sometimes tricky to do, but I’ve found the best way is to wiggle your eyeliner pencil back and forth basically inside the lash line. The goal is the get the liner in between your lashes—that’s what makes them look fuller.
Step 4: (Optional) Line the water line of your bottom lashes as well. If you’re going for a more subtle look, run your eyeliner pencil along the lash line on the bottom as well, right on the inner rim of the eye.
You’re done! Don’t forget the most important (my favorite) part, mascara! Bonus trick: wiggle your mascara from side to side horizontally from the lash base upward to get the fullest look. Just these few simple steps and your eyes will look great with the illusion of hardly wearing any makeup at all. I’d call that a win win. And of course, as a wise woman named Tyra always says, don’t forget to smize.
