It’s practically the end of the year and with the holidays coming up soon there’s this unwritten pressure to live up to something meaningful. If we try to think about the goals we had for ourselves at the beginning of the year and compare them to where we are now. I can’t even remember what my New Year resolution was.
In the next few days and upcoming weeks, we’re all going to have some dreaded interactions with family members. It’s going to be uncomfortable when they start to ask you very INTRUSIVE questions about your life. Expect these questions to come up often (they’re all going to ask the same ones):
How is college?
“I love all my classes. I’m learning so much!”
Translation: Umm, I’m having a hard time meeting people, a.k.a. my social life is shit. How do I even talk to people, let alone make new friends?!? The ones I have now aren’t bad…
Before you start beating yourself up and get caught up in everyone else’s expectations, take a few steps back. It is true that you are learning things in your classes even when some information seems like necessary evils. When it comes to building a social life, making new friends shouldn’t be rushed. You either click with someone or you don’t. Relationships that are forced will not transform into something real. Guess what? Everyone is looking to make new friends, so just be patient. Once you figure out your true interests and pinpoint activities to take part in, meeting new people will get easier!
“I really love it! I’m meeting a lot of people and having new experiences.”
Translation:
1. Hmm..my grades could have been better. I didn’t fail anything I guess.
2. I was broke most of the semester. I had money solely designated for alcohol rather than healthy balanced meals and you know Disney tickets.
3. Someone broke my heart and I’m still not over it.
If it’s not one truth, its a mixed variation of all three. A lot of things happen in fourten weeks! College life isn’t meant to always be glamorous and fun, you’ll have to go through hardships that aren’t mentioned in this article. It’s all necessary in our transformation from doe-eyed college freshmen to becoming somewhat insightful seniors. We have to make mistakes along the way.
What are you studying?
“ (Insert Major Here), it will give me a lot of options when I graduate!”
Translation: I have no idea what my life is about.
Stressing about your future? Yeah stop doing that, it’s not healthy. Whoever has been telling you that you need to have everything mapped out perfectly, has lied to you! There’s a reason your heart races when you spend too long predicting your future. Rather than fearing the uncertainties, revel in them. Be present in the moment. Be adventurous. Be kind. When you work hard and continue to do the things that are meaningful to you, you’ll find your way.
