Winter is fast upon us, which means that so are colds and the flu. So, as a former dependent upon super mom to cure you, how do you take care of yourself without sending out an SOS? Here are a few ways to take care of yourself when you’re sick (without having to call mom).
1. Vitamin C
A big way to help you get better faster is to rid yourself of the toxins that are causing you to be sick. Vitamin C does this by flushing out your body, so you will most likely need the bathroom more often, but feeling better later is a big pay off. It also helps boost your immune system so you can fight the sickness easier. Some great sources of Vitamin C include orange juice, fruit, vegetables, and Vitamin C tablets.
2. Sleep
When you’re sick you often don’t have the energy to do anything, and that’s okay (at least for one or two days). Either cancel your date with homework and go to bed early, or skip your early morning lecture to get in some extra sleep. Even better would be sleeping the whole weekend, but we all know that colds like to hit us in the middle of a stressful week. More sleep will give you extra energy to rejuvenate your body and help you feel better.
3. Hydrate
Drinking enough fluids is key to getting better. Make sure water and orange juice are staples when you’re sick, because they will keep you hydrated and help flush out your body. Other suggested drinks include tea and soup broth. These can help boost your energy as well as fulfill your body’s nutrient needs without you having to actually eat.
4. Hygiene
You already have enough germs to deal with, so make sure you wash your hands often, use hand sanitizer, and disinfect your room. Getting rid of your own germs from your room’s surfaces will help you get better because you aren’t constantly exposed to them. Also, a hot shower helps open up the sinuses and relieve sore muscles that can occur from being sick and cooped up in bed all day.
If you still feel like you’re dying after doing all these, then it’s okay to call mom for her super healing powers. Stay healthy Badgers!
