It seems like it was just yesterday, when his dashing smile and impressive dance moves graced our screens as we watched “Run It” premiere on 106 and Park. Everyone wanted to know three things; how old is this boy? Where is he from? And the most important question: Is he single? At one point in time, Chris Brown was the majority of teenage girls with hormones “Bae” or “Dream Guy.” “In middle school, my entire wall was decorated with pictures of him, I was obsessed,” said Brianae Tuck ’18. However, for anyone who pays attention to the news and social media, you would have notice that Chris Brown hasn’t been quite the role model. His erratic behavior, case of the ex, and constant run-in with the law are leading others to question whether sooner or later will we have to “Say Goodbye” to the previously known Prince of R&B.
To truly analyze the change in something, one must trace back to the beginning. The same has to be done with Chris Brown. In November of 2005, Chris Brown released his single “Run It” which skyrocketed to be No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. He was so striking that he was starting to give Usher a run for his money. It didn’t stop just there. In September 2007, Chris Brown performed for the first time on MTV Video Music Awards and everyone was fascinated by his exhilarating and aerobic style performance. Hopping from stage to stage was something no other budding artist had done before.
It wasn’t until the catastrophic night of February in 2009, where things started to take a turn for the worst. It was on this night where Chris Brown and (then girlfriend) Rihanna were involved in a physical fight that resulted in Rihanna’s face being bruised. Later that night Chris Brown turned himself into the LAPD and was charged with assault.
Sadly enough, every since that night Chris Brown just can’t seem to get it together. “I legit thought he had it together, he apologized on National Television and his music has been popping ever since,” said Akilah Hamler ’18. Part of this is true, because in 2011 the album F.A.M.E earned him his first Grammy. This all backfired in 2012, when him and rapper Drake got in a fight at a NYC Club and again in 2013 when he was arrested for a felony assault in Washington, D.C. He finally went to jail in March to serve his time.
June 5, 2014 was the glorious day where Chris Brown was released from jail, and telling by the pictures on Instagram of the surprise party thrown for him, everyone was excited and glad that he was back home. It seems like no matter how many times Chris Brown may take us through an emotional roller coaster of comebacks, one thing still remains the same at the end of the day: the love for his fans.
