Shave the Date: Laurier Takes on Movember!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

The start of November marks that time of year when grizzly bears can be expected to be seen lurking through campus…okay, not really, BUT it does mark the start of Movember! Men all across campus will be retiring their razors and shaving cream for the month to raise awareness and support for men’s prostate and testicular cancer, along with men’s mental health. Movember WLU has teamed up with The Laurier Lettermen Club to present several events this month to collect donations for such a worthy cause. Clear your calendars and don’t forget to “shave” the date for these events!

Movember Open Mic Night

Movember WLU is taking over Wilf’s weekly open mic night tonight at 9pm! It’s going to be a night of raffle prizes, great people, and live music from your very own Laurier Golden Hawks and surrounding area students and bands. Come out to their event to show your support for Movember and kickoff the month in style! Computers will be available to sign up for Movember on site, so don’t miss out on a great opportunity to support and donate to an amazing cause! For more information, check out the Facebook event page!

Breaking Down Barriers

The Paul Martin Centre will be holding the Breaking Down Barriers speaker panel event on November 14th from 7pm – 9pm. Speakers Dave Patterson and Andrew Myles will be discussing the issue of breaking down stigma towards mental health and a personal journey through a battle with testicular cancer. Admission is free and seats can be reserved online after Movember Open Mic Night, so keep an eye out for more information about this event on the Movember WLU Facebook page!

Mo Varsity Night

Come support Movember with the Laurier’s varsity athletes at Wilf’s and Turret on November 18th beginning at 7pm! It will be a long night featuring a Volunteer Fair, Junior Varsity Dance-Off, Varsity Talent Show, Varsity Auction, and a party at Turret to finish it off. If the chance to bid on varsity athletes isn’t enough motivation to come out, there will be plenty of other prizes to be won throughout the night. More information about this event will be available on The Laurier Lettermen Club and Movember WLU Facebook pages closer to the date, so ‘Like’ them both to stay in the loop!

Mo Hoops: WLU Basketball vs. Carleton Ravens

Come out to support your Laurier men and ladies varsity basketball teams as they take on the Carleton Ravens on November 26th at 6pm (ladies’ game) and 8pm (men’s game) in the Athletic Complex. There will be a raffle draw and beanbag toss, so come out for a chance to win great prizes! Tickets will be sold in the concourse for $2.

Movember Trivia Night

Come out to Wilf’s on November 26th from 10pm – 12:30am for their weekly trivia night, Movember style! There will be Movember themed questions and great prizes up for grabs, so make a donation and show off your expertise in all things Movember!

Mo Ball Hockey Tournament

Movember WLU and The Link are teaming up to bring you a Movember Ball Hockey Tournament on November 29th in the Athletic Complex Parking Lot! There is a $10 fee per member for a 10-person team ($100 per team) and a maximum of 20 teams. The Movember WLU Facebook page will have more information closer to the date of the event!

WLU Mo Celebration

To wrap up the month, there will be a Movember themed Turret night on November 19th from 10pm – 3am! There will be lots of prizes, a photo booth, and a Mr. and Mrs. Movember announced by the end of the night, so make sure to come out and celebrate the end of what we hope to be the most successful Movember at Laurier yet!

Don’t forget to Like the Movember WLU Facebook page for more information about events and what you can do to raise awareness for men’s prostate and testicular cancer, along with men’s mental health!

I’m sure you all remember our Campus Celebrity, Jeremy Hedges! This varsity athlete is putting a spin on the traditional Movember challenge – if his team raises over $2000+ on their Movember page or reach 2000+ Likes on The Laurier Lettermen Club Facebook page, he will CUT HIS HAIR into a MOUSTACHE! If that isn’t incentive enough to support his campaign, The Laurier Lettermen Club will also be donating $0.25 for every Like they receive on Facebook!

To learn more about Jeremy’s campaign and what The Laurier Lettermen Club is doing to support Movember, head over to their Facebook page and check out what they’ve got going on for this month!
