Trend Spotting: Sweaters and Skirts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rhodes chapter.

Hello lovelies!  Today I’m going to talk to you about a trend I’ve been seeing around campus within the past month or so since its getting colder outside.  I’ve been seeing a lot of girls wearing sweaters with skirts or over dresses lately.  Wearing a sweater with a skirt is a great way to warm up in the transition between summer and fall because it combines warm weather clothing with cold weather clothing, providing the perfect balance of temperatures.  It’s also a dressier look than wearing sweaters with shorts or pants, and you can always add tights when the weather gets colder.  I’ll be showing you five different girls who are wearing different variations of this trend.

#1: Loose Sweater Tucked into Flowy Skirt

Abby Watkins (’18)

Tucking a casual sweater into a flowy skirt makes the sweater seem dressier, and adding a belt cinches Abby’s waist and makes the whole outfit more flattering.  She added a pair of flats in a funky pattern to make the outfit more interesting and classic.

#2: Sweater Worn Over a Skirt

Caroline Ilnicky (’18)

Mixing prints and textures is a big trend, and Caroline does a great job of that here by wearing an emerald sweater over a leopard print skirt.  Leaving the sweater untucked gives the outfit a more comfortable and casual vibe.  She finishes off the outfit with a pair of lacy socks and boots to add a dressy feel while still being comfortable.

#3: Longer Sweater over Fitted Skirt

Marlena Jones (’16)

Marlena has a slightly different take on the trend then Abby and Caroline; instead of wearing a flowy skirt with a more fitted sweater, she wore a more fitted dress with a looser sweater over it.  The sweater makes the more formal dress feel more casual, along with her textured socks and flat black boots.

#4: Fitted Sweater with Flowy Skirt

Victoria Elliot (’15)

Wearing a fitted sweater with a more flowy skirt is a great way to bring warmth to an outfit instead of simply wearing a long-sleeved shirt.  Victoria also donned a thick belt to dress up the sweater a bit, and topped it off with knee-high socks and boots to dress up the sweater even more.

#5: Fitted Sweater over a Collared Dress

Alice Fugate (’18)

Last but not least, Alice added a fitted sweater to a dressy collared dress for warmth and to bring a more casual, whimsical look to her outfit.  Letting the collar peek through her sweater brings a uniformity to her outfit and dresses up the sweater significantly.  She also wore tights and flats in an attempt to still keep the formality of the dress intact to an extent.

There are several different variations of this trend, but all of them manage to combine the formality of a skirt with the casual nature of a sweater very well.  Hopefully you try this trend if you haven’t already!

Remember to always be cute!

Hi! I'm Sarah Johnson, and I am the Campus Correspondent for Her Campus Rhodes! I am a senior at Rhodes from Little Rock, AR. I am a Music major, I am a Research and Writing Fellow in the Curb Institute and I sing in the Women's Chorus. In my spare time I like to sleep, eat various snack foods, and watch beauty bloggers on YouTube. My main area of expertise is fashion. My personal style is definitely on the hip side of things, and my pattern of choice is stripes. Thirfting is my number one passion, and I hope to never pay full price for an item of clothing until I can actually afford it. I’ve recently noticed that I almost exclusively wear neutrals, which I am trying to remedy with the purchase of color, but it’s not working very well for me. I hope you all enjoy the articles I write and remember to always be cute!
