The ‘90’s and early ‘00’s were an interesting time for fashion. It was perfectly acceptable to wear all denim to awards ceremonies, a million butterfly hairclips and sport a transparent, jelly backpack. Everything about fashion from this time was very undefined and kitschy; we wanted to simultaneously dress like Lizzie McGuire and Zenon Kar. To illustrate just how outlandish the fashion was, here are the top 10 most embarrassing fashion trends from the ‘90’s and early ‘00’s. And don’t lie, you totally sported all of these.
1. Choker Necklaces: What would our childhoods be without those stretchy necklaces that left coiled designs on your neck long after you took them off?
2. Convertible Pants: Stepped in a puddle? Too hot outside? Never fear, in a matter of seconds you can turn your pants into capris or shorts.
3. Peasant Tops and Skirts: The ultimate go-to for when you wanted to be comfortable but still look cute and feminine. Or when your skort was in the laundry that day.
4. Mood Rings: How do I feel today? I know, let me check my mood ring.
5. Mini Buns + Hair Clips Galore: My hair never cooperated with this Miley Cyrus look so I compensated by putting a giant clip in my hair. How else were we supposed to show off our choker necklaces?
6. Bold Windbreakers: ‘90’s kids were always prepared for windy days. Bonus points if you had matching pants.
7. Oriental Fashion: Formfitting, shiny, printed, and the most random and slightly offensive trend. If you were super committed to the look you wore buns and chopsticks in your hair.
8. Iridescent Everything: We watched Zenon Girl of the 21st Century one too many times. Whether it was our school supplies, sneakers or pants we wanted to hone our inner space girl.
9. Clear Backpacks: I admit, I had a cobalt blue Barbie one. Let’s be honest, we all wanted the bubble looking one though.
10. Platform Shoes: Most of us were too young to wear platform heels but that did not stop us from wearing platform sandals and sneakers. And yes, I did have N*SYNC purple platform sneakers.
