Adam is the current president of UNC Wilmigton’s honors fraternity, Phi Sigma Pi. He leads the fraternity in a very professional manner, while also maintaining a fun and friendly atmosphere within the organization. Outside of meetings and events, Adam enjoys spending as much time as possible with his PSP brothers. When he is not busy presiding over PSP, he spends his time working at the Student Recreation Center and being a member of the UNCW Swim Club and Scuba Club. Needless to say, Adam is very driven and there is no doubt that he will accomplish great things after graduation!
HC: What is Phi Sigma Pi and what made you join the organization?
Phi Sigma Pi is an academic honors fraternity that is composed of both male and female members. Phi Sigma Pi consists of features held by an honor society, service group and social organization. Our UNCW Chapter named Beta Omicron also requires a 3.0 GPA for membership. This blend of emphasis on academic achievement with service contributions is what originally made me want to join the organization. Once I began the rush process however, I learned how great of a social experience this organization is. Through Phi Sigma Pi, I was able to create some of the best friendships of my life while also creating countless fantastic memories.
Â
HC: What made you decide to run for president of Phi Sigma Pi?
The reason I wished to run for the Presidency is due to my passion and respect for the organization. I wanted to seize the opportunity to give back to the organization and brotherhood that has been such a significant aspect of my time at UNCW. My previous experiences with leadership and managerial positions through work and other organization positions allowed me to feel confident in my abilities to lead and improve the organization.
Â
HC: Besides Phi Sigma Pi, what else are you involved in on campus?
I have been employed by the UNCW Campus Recreation Center Aquatics Department since my freshman year of college and hold the positions of Program Assistant, Aquatics Supervisor, Health and Safety Instructor, Water Safety Instructor, and Lifeguard. I am also a currently active member of the UNCW Swim Club and Scuba Club. Previously, I spent three years being a member of UNCW Surfrider Organization. Within Surfrider, I held the positions of Vice President and Public Relations co-chair.
Â
HC: What kind of events does Phi Sigma Pi hold?
Phi Sigma Pi holds events that circulate around our fraternity’s tripod of core values. This tripod consists of scholarship, leadership and fellowship. Also within our UNCW chapter of Phi Sigma Pi we have numerous committees which host related events. During our rush week process, we hold events that allow prospective members the ability to know our active brothers and gather an understanding of what Phi Sigma Pi is all about. This rush week included brother speed dating, field day activities, a trivia night and concluded with a night at Sharky’s. Several examples of events our active brothers participate in are attending sporting events together (such as UNCW games and Carolina Hurricanes games), scholarship based trips (such as Indian Culture Weekend in Charlotte, NC) and numerous service events around Wilmington. We also host a formal/semi-formal every semester, which has recently been at downtown locations such as The Battleship and other traditional venues. These events are where active, inactive and alumni brothers come together for a night of celebrations and fun.
Â
HC: What was your favorite event?
My personal favorite events have been traveling to watching the Carolina Hurricanes games where we typically have a group of 15-20 people and our formal events to conclude the semester. Each semester brings different and unique events, which build strong bonds of fellowship while also empowering our brotherhood to grow and develop as individuals.
