Let’s face it–most of us are collegiate women on a budget. We spent money during the summer to dress for the warmth, and now the pressure is on to spend money for the fast approaching winter. Summer has come and gone, but not all of the clothes from those wonderful warm months have to go in storage. There are a ton of ways to continue wearing those clothes, even as the cold weather settles in.
1. Dresses: One of the saddest things about winter is retiring short summer frocks. Except, you don’t have to! There are many ways to layer dresses to match the weather. If you have a tank dress, find a solid colored long sleeved shirt to wear underneath. Black is always a good contrasting option, but feel free to add color as long as it doesn’t clash. If the dress has sleeves, skinny jeans are a great option, particularly if the dress has a fit and flare style. Pair it with a jacket, high socks and boots, and you are good to go!
2. Capris: These are another item generally not considered to be winter approved. There are, however, a couple of ways to wear them post summer’s end. In the fall, you have the option of wearing capris with ankle boots. Paired with a long shirt and a scarf, it’s perfect for weather that is crisp, but not yet cold. As the weather gets colder, wear the capris over high socks or even leggings. The colder it gets, the more you layer.
3. Light Shirts: There’s no need to place light summer shirts in the back of the closet. There’s a myriad of ways to make these shirts work as the cold months approach. You can try paring a summery shirt with a heavy or oversized cardigan. These cardigans usually retain a lot of heat, so having a light shirt underneath is often a plus. Scarves also are great for summer shirts worn in the winter. If the shirt leaves too much skin around your collarbone open, a thick infinity scarf is the perfect solution. Just like dresses, your favorite tank or spaghetti strap tops can be paired with long sleeves shirts. Throw a vest over it, and you’ve got a great winter look.
