How to Deal with the Chilly Weather

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rowan chapter.

Ah, fall. The trees change color, the mosquitoes disappear. Hot cocoa galore, pumpkins everywhere, haunted houses, bonfires and the inevitable cold that accompanies it all. If you’re more of a summer and spring kind of person rather than fall and winter, these upcoming chilly months are not the greatest part of the year. I am myself a fall lover, but I still get cold. I mean, we’re all human, right? Here are some ways that can help keep you warm till spring break.

1.      Layers. The annoying part of this time of year is that the weather changes throughout the day (‘cuz you’re hot and you’re cold, you’re yes and you’re no
.♫) It could be cold in the morning and then suddenly it’s really hot in the afternoon. The trick to getting around this? Wear light layers. Have on a tank top or t-shirt, and on top through on your favorite cardigan or sweater. Comfortable, warm, and hey, cute too.

2.      Scarves are your best friend. I for one cannot walk past a rack of scarves in a store without at least stopping to look. Though not all of them are made for Eskimos, a lot of them are very warm and gorgeous. Add in scarves to your wardrobe and you’ll not only feel chic, but also very warm.

3.      Hot beverages. Coffee, cocoa, tea. Whatever you please, carry around a warm thermos of it around campus. The thermos will keep your hands warm, the steam rising out of the cup will keep your nose warm and the hot drink sliding down your throat would warm up your insides. It is definitely my favorite part of the cold weather.

4.      Boots. Need I say more?

5.      Plan. As you are sure to know, not all the buildings on campus are on point when it comes to the weather. Wilson can be absolutely freezing, Robinson is kind of humid and the Science Hall is moodier than the printers in the library. When you’re getting dressed for class, think about where you’ll be throughout the day. Then, wear whatever scarves and layers suit your schedule.

6.      Hats! Oh come on, you know they’re adorable. Beanies and knit caps almost make messing up your hair worth it. And plus, it doesn’t hurt that your ears aren’t about to fall off either.

7.      Fuzzy socks. Colorful, warm and cozy. They’re fun, they’re silly and an awesome salute to your bangin’ personality.

8.      Soup. After a cold day of classes, hit the student center and grab a cup of your favorite soup, or make one at home. There’s a flavor for every soul.

9.      Bonfires. Make a night of it! Meet up with a group of your friends and have a great night sitting around a bonfire. Make some s’mores, drink hot chocolate, tell stories and sing the every so popular campfire song. Or not, that is completely up to you. I know I would.    C-A-M-P-F-I-R-E-S-O-N-G SONG!

10.  Sleep tight. Not only is it important to sleep for 7-8 hours each night (we can dream, can’t we?) but it is also crucial to spend said 7-8 hours underneath a nice pile of blankets and comforters. Put on your favorite pair of pajamas – don’t forget the fuzzy socks – and bundle up with a nice big blanket. You’ll sleep like a baby.

Fall and winter are either your favorite months, or your least desired. There are plenty of holidays to look forward to; Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year’s Eve. It’s a beautiful time of year and all the sales in the stores are pretty awesome too. But none of this is enjoyable if you are too sick to go outside. So stay warm, have fun, and enjoy the seasons!
