Dorm Room Spa: DIY Face Masks You Can Make at Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

After a long week of classes, sometimes it’s nice to pamper yourself a little. However, spa treatments and mani/pedis can wreak havoc on a college budget. But no worries! We’ve compiled a list of easy beauty treatments you can make right in your dorm or apartment with whatever groceries you have lying around. Even better, each beauty treatment is specifically targeted to a different problem, so everyone can find something that fits their skin type!

Coffee and Honey Mask:

This mask is perfect for the morning after a long night out or after pulling an all-nighter in the library. The coffee is energizing, while the honey and yogurt will moisturize and bring some brightness to your tired eyes.

Ingredients:

2 tbsp. ground coffee

½ tbsp. honey

2 tbsp. unflavored yogurt (Greek is best)

Directions: Mix all the ingredients together and apply all over your face. Leave the mask on for 15-20 minutes or until dry, and rinse the mask off with warm water.

Aspirin Mask for Breakouts:

Worried about getting rid of that zit on your forehead before your date tomorrow night? This mask has you covered. Easy to make and made up of only three ingredients, this mask can be applied over your whole face to fight and prevent breakouts, or used in small amounts to spot-treat problem areas. No matter where you apply it, the mask will fight redness and swelling, so all you’ll have to worry about is picking out the perfect outfit for your date.

Ingredients:

4 uncoated aspirin tablets

1 tbsp. honey

2 tbsp. water

Directions: Put aspirin into a bowl, add the water, and stir the mixture until the aspirin is completely dissolved. Add the honey and mix well, then apply to your whole face or the affected area. After 15 minutes, wash off the mask with warm water and reveal your beautiful, new skin!

Honey and Lemon Mask:

This mask is perfect for winter, when skin has to put up with freezing temperatures and lots of wind. It will refresh dull skin and make your whole face glow. Better yet, it’s one of the easiest masks to make on this list and is great for nights in with Netflix and lots of blankets!

Ingredients:

4 tbsp. honey

2 tbsp. lemon juice

Directions: Mix together both ingredients and apply all over your face. After 15 minutes or when you reach the end of the New Girl episode you’re watching, rise off the mask with warm water and marvel at your glowing face.

Avocado Mask:

If you have dry skin, this mask will change your life. So luxurious and thick, it will moisturize even the thirstiest of skin.

Ingredients:

½ cup avocado

¼ cup honey

Directions: Stir together honey and avocado until a smooth paste forms with no chunks. Spread in an even layer over your face, and leave on for 5 minutes. Then use warm water to wash it all off for soft and beautiful skin.

Soothing Cucumber Mask:

This mask uses cucumber, known for its hydrating and soothing properties, to calm irritation and repair any damage. This is perfect for combination skin, which may be oily in some places and dry in others. It targets problem areas and is good for improving the overall texture of skin, making it a great all-around solution for your skin woes.

Ingredients:

1 cucumber, chopped finely, grated, or pulsed in a blender

1 egg, using only the white

Directions: In a bowl, whisk the egg whites until frothy. Stir in the cucumber, and apply all over your face and neck in an even layer. After 15-20 minutes of relaxation, you’re ready to rinse off your mask!

Now that you know how to make these easy face masks, you have the perfect excuse to spend a night in painting your nails, pampering yourself, and maybe even convincing your roommate to give you a massage… a girl can dream, right?
