Five Pumpkin Things We Love – That Don’t Include Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

Fall is finally here! Apple picking, layered clothing, football tailgating and leaves are falling all around campus. Most importantly, pumpkins are everywhere! Pumpkin patches are currently overflowing with the biggest and roundest pumpkins for you to claim, carve and bake. And, believe it or not, there are pumpkin treats that taste even better than the pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks. Who knew?

We’ve made a list of five pumpkin treats we’ve decided that you HAVE to try this fall.

Whitey’s Pumpkin Shake

Located in the heart of Iowa City, this shake from Whitey’s Ice Cream Shop will cure all your sweet and pumpkin cravings in just one sip. This perfect fall treat is full of graham crackers, whipped cream, cinnamon sugar and pumpkin falvoring all swirled into graham central station ice cream. And, unlike coffee, you can stick it in your freezer and come back the tasty goodness later. Yum!

Pumpkin Beer and Ale

The options of fall beers and ales are endless, but we’ve picked out the five best pumpkin beverages for you to try. Our favorites are Shocktop’s Pumpkin Wheat, Blue Moon’s Harvest Pumpkin Ale, Heartland’s Imperial Smiling Pumpkin Ale, Dogfish Head’s Pumpkin Ale and Samuel Adam’s Harvest Pumpkin Ale. Check them out at your football team’s next fall tailgate, and let us know what you like best. And as always, remember to drink responsibly!

Pumpkin Bread

We can’t complain about banana bread and zucchini bread, but they aren’t as delicious as pumpkin bread! This pumpkin bread recipe by The Food Network is one of best fall treats you could bake and share. We recommend you to double the batch and bring it to the next football tailgate. Enjoy!

Pumpkin Seeds

After choosing and carving your perfect pumpkin, you’re going to want to keep the seeds. Baking pumpkin seeds is so quick and simple. Plus, you can add whatever kind of spices you’d like to bring out the pumpkin flavor. Spoiler alert: this pumpkin treat is actually healthy. Pass us another serving, please!

Pumpkin Spice Oreos

Oreo is notorious for coming up with crazy seasonal flavors and this season is no exception. This fall pumpkin treat is a limited edition, and you’ll want to try these at least once before they’re cleared off the shelves. Visit your nearest Hyvee or Walmart here in Iowa City and pick up a package to try and share with all your friends. Where’s the milk?

With the fall temperatures bringing a chill to the air, we don’t blame you if still want to grab a warm pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks before class or work. However, your stomach will start to crave more pumpkin treats, and you now have the recipes to make your stomach and your friends more than happy. It’s time to put on your favorite pair of boots, pair it with your favorite scarf and go cheer for your favorite football team – with your favorite pumpkin treats, of course. Enjoy!

And, as always, go hawks!
