Red Band Society Episode 3: Liar, Liar Pants on Fire

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

*HCTU SPOILER ALERT*

Charlie starts the show with his thoughts on lying; people lie to make themselves and others feel better. Lying, to put it simply, is just easier to do. To fit his declaration, Kara is seen trying to buy weed from a guy who has Nurse Brittany’s number because she gave it to him. Once the boy runs off without giving her weed, she yells that the number was a fake, only to turn around and come face to face with Nurse Jackson who drags her back to her room.

In the aftermath of Jordi’s health update, the bond between him and Emma grows stronger. He even opens up to her about his family; he never met his dad, his mother is dead and his grandmother thinks there is a devil in his leg. Leo, who vows to be there for Jordi, suddenly changes his track and decides to pursue Emma after taking notice of her and Jordi’s budding relationship.

Leo spending less time with Dash, which leaves Dash feeling jealous of Jordi and frustrated with Leo, but Nurse Brittany gives him the best advice: a real friend will always need you. Though she meant well, Dash looks for any opportunity to get Leo back on his side.

Back in Kara’s world, Nurse Jackson catches her having sex with a boy, which she claim, is the only thing that will take her mind off of drugs, “I’m a drug addict!” As punishment, Jackson becomes Kara’s companion, meaning that they will be together at all times and though things seems to be working at first, Jackson gives up when she overhears Kara trying to obtain a sick child’s drugs. Jackson wants nothing more than for Kara to pass her pee test.

Nurse Brittany observed that Dr. McAndrew was wearing a blue tie, meaning he had sex the night before. He tries to deny it multiple times, but is caught in his own lie when the woman he did sleep with, Eva, comes into the hospital. Eva claimed to be Jordi’s mother, giving Dash the ammunition he needs to get Leo back.

As Emma catches onto Leo’s agenda, she shuts him down. Though he says he broke up with her because of his fear of living, she says the exact opposite reason is why they didn’t last. He was afraid living meant that he would have to stay with her; a girl who isn’t his definition of pretty and wasn’t the one looking for the next party. She simply liked him more than he liked her.

Leo’s rejection from Emma makes it much easier to become mad at Jordi for lying to him about his mother. Dash and Leo try to intimidate him, but Jordi brings up a valid point: Dash lies to get pot, Leo lies to skip physical therapy; “at least I lie to save my own life.”

Jordi deals with his mother by placing their fate in the hands of poker. If he wins, he gets to become emancipated and if his mother wins, she remains in his life as his mother. Even though Jordi wants nothing more than to be in charge of his own health, he lets his mother win. After talking to Dr. McAndrew, he realizes that he may need his mother more than he thinks.

In a rare moment of reflection, Jackson confides in Nurse Kenji and tells him about the disappointment she feels within herself. She blames herself for Kara being able to have sex behind her back and struggles with the possibility that there may be no good part of Kara. She is quickly pleased once Kenji reveals that Kara passed her pee test.

The show ends with Emma ultimately putting Leo, to his dismay, in the friend zone, Eva continuing her relationship with Dr.McAndrew even though it may not be in the best interest of Jordi and Kara sneaking a pill. Passing her pee test doesn’t automatically mean that the problem has been solved.

As Charlie stated at the beginning of the show, lying is just better sometimes and the teens clearly think alike. Why tell the truth when the exact opposite of it is always an option?
