On those days when the sun hardly shines and the rain pours down over South Bend, it is easy to feel just as gloomy as the clouds overhead. However, days like this can be a great opportunity to catch up on the things in life which we often let slip through the cracks.
Dreary days are perfect for relaxing and doing what makes you happy. Here are some ways to brighten up your life by making the most out of a gloomy day:
1. Hibernate.
Few things are quite as relaxing as falling asleep to the sound of rain outside your window. Take advantage of this and enjoy the unbelievably long nap that you desperately need and definitely deserve.
Â
2. Catch up on the little things.
This could include painting your nails, organizing your closet, cleaning up your desk, finally getting to that enormous pile of laundry in the corner of your room, or working on any other aspect of your life that you’ve been consistently pushing to the bottom of your to-do list. By completing even these small tasks, you’ll feel refreshed, organized, and ready for whatever life throws at you.
3. Decorate your room.
Use this time indoors to do that awesome craft that you found on Pinterest months ago, or to finally get around to hanging up the stack of pictures that is piling up on your desk. A rainy afternoon is an excellent time to spruce up your dorm room, and to add those small touches to it that make it truly your own.
4. Wear your adorable rain gear.
Rainy days are a great excuse to wear those brightly colored rain boots and adorable rain jackets that we all love so much. Coupled with your go-to pair of leggings, your rainy day outfit can be just as polished and put-together as any other day’s ensemble.
5. Bake something.
Take the time to try out a new recipe or bake one of your old favorites. Baking is a great tactic for stress relief, and provides an excellent study snack for those upcoming late nights.
6. Call a friend or family member.
As a hectic week soon becomes a busy month, it is easy to lose touch with loved ones from home. A quiet afternoon is a perfect time to catch up with a friend on the recent details of your lives, or to call your parents and fill them in on all that you’ve been accomplishing at Notre Dame lately and to thank them again for all that they do!
7. Have a movie marathon.
Set aside some time to see that new movie that everyone’s been talking about, or spend an afternoon re-watching all of your old favorite rom-coms. After all, if you can’t recite them word for word, you probably haven’t seen them enough times. And we all know that a day of watching Ryan Gosling do his thing is a day well spent.
Make sure to stay positive during dismal days, and avoid letting the weather affect your outlook on your day. If you start to feel down, reflect on some of the classic rom-com characters who have been swept off their feet by love in the middle of a rainstorm. Maybe one of these moments will happen for you too.
