Walking down Hancock Street, nearing Blackbird, my admiration grew. A breeding ground for soulful poetry, art and music, Blackbird inspires me. The freshly roasted coffee beans also never disappoint. But this time was different. I sat down with one of Blackbird’s featured artists Kalin Jordan. Her photographs spanned the wall opposite us, beautifully hung, lingering above our conversation. Glowing with a humble radiance Jordan explained that the project was originally for her photography class.
“We had to pick a photographer and interpret their work and kind of make it our own,” said Jordan.
Drawn to nature and minimalism she chose the late Karl Blossfeldt, who was known for black and white close-ups of plant life. Jordan’s prints exude a similar minimalistic beauty of plant life,  yet have a flair all their own. She photographed the colorful handpicked flowers from the local Greenway in color rather than black and white. Arranging the flowers atop white tables Jordan allowed for the natural hues to pop. She devoted 18 total hours to shooting, editing, arranging and finally matting the prints against foam boards.
“Printing them out is probably the most exciting part of that process,” said Jordan.
She added that her passion for nature and minimalism derives from her Christian faith.
“I think God’s really working through it. It’s paralleling some of the things in my spiritual life right now,” Jordan said.
“I get so in awe of God and the beauty he’s created.”
