Meet Selah!
Selah Stivers is a senior International Area Studies major from Lancaster, PA. She is one of the founders of Students Advocating Against Slavery (SAAS) and serves as the Vice President. After taking a class on human trafficking, Selah and some friends within her major started talking about ways they could get involved. Kaelee Shepherd, the President of SAAS, wanted to see Drexel’s campus take on this issue in a way that would allow students to really have an impact. A group got together and created the club as a way to create a campus community that was informed about human trafficking and had the opportunity to be actively involved in fighting against modern day slavery.
Since SAAS is a fairly new organization, a lot of the work is focused on getting established. They are planning events, getting their name out on campus, and working to create a group of students who are willing to be active participants in the organization. As VP, Selah focuses on planning events and working alongside the rest of the executive team to keep the organization moving.Â
SAAS has several goals that they want to accomplish. First, they want to create a community at Drexel of well-informed individuals. People cannot combat an issue they do not know exists. They have been working at this through public awareness campaigns and informational events. Second, SAAS wants to actively support organizations that are already working to end human trafficking. This is accomplished through fundraisers and events designed to raise support. Finally, they want to give Drexel students the opportunity to be involved in the process. As college students, we don’t always have the most money or resources to give to an organization, but we do have time. SAAS is working to set up experiences for students to fight human trafficking in a hands-on, interactive way.
Selah is extremely proud to be involved with SAAS. The leaders are so driven and compassionate and are truly an inspiration to her each and every day. She says that the best part of being involved with the organization is seeing what can be accomplished when a group of dedicated people put their mind to something. Just a few months after they started the organization, they were able to host an successful guest-speaker event, which would not have been possible without the hard work of their executive team and advisor.Â
For Selah, one of the best parts of attending Drexel is having the opportunity to meet such a wide variety of people. Being actively involved with her sorority on campus, as well as other student groups, is such a great way for her to add more depth to he college experience. The friends she has made through her involvement in Delta Zeta and SAAS have become her family here at school.
After graduation, Selah definitely wants to take some time off to travel, and figure out what lies ahead. This experience has certainly influenced her career path. She always knew she wanted to work internationally, but this experience with SAAS confirmed the fact that she wants to have a job that truly makes a difference. It is so easy to settle into a job that is comfortable, and she wants to make sure that she is doing something that matters. In her free time, Selah loves exploring new parts of Philadelphia. There are so many amazing restaurants, coffee shops, and stores in the various neighborhoods of the city. She said it is so fun to grab a group of friends and check out a new part of Philly. Selah also loves cooking, writing, running and spontaneous road trips.
