New Nail Polish Detects Date Rape Drugs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

We’ve all been told to never take a drink from a stranger…and we’ve all heard those horrifying stories about the girls who did. Although date rape drugs aren’t the only culprits behind rape culture in today’s society, it is a huge issue that needs to be addressed immediately.

A very controversial topic is what is known as rape culture (previously stated). Most people have probably heard of rape culture or know what it is, but for those of you who haven’t, it’s a [now] commonly used phrase that refers to a culture that views rape as normal and has the attitude that women are “asking for it.”

Rape culture is a rather disgusting and disturbing thing. And the fact that it exists in today’s society makes me (and many, many others) absolutely sick. However, there are people that are taking action.

Four students at the North Carolina State University recently created a new nail polish that detects date rape drugs in drinks. All the person wearing this nail polish has to do is dip their finger in their drink and if the nail polish changes color, then that person would best be served not drinking their drink because it contains a date rape drug.

These four students started a company last April, called Undercover Colors, for their new nail polish product. The nail polish is still in the process of being developed but hopefully we will be seeing this nail polish on the shelves soon!
