A few weeks ago, I woke up spitting mad, for no reason. I was hungry and tired and bleary eyed. My head hurt all day, I was hungry and nothing appealed to me, my dog farted in my face and I didn’t find it charming as I usually do. Ugh. I know these problems are infinitely smaller than problems people in the rest of the world have, it doesn’t mean I wasn’t in a fowl mood.
Bad days are the worst. Especially for someone as lucky as me because I have no reason to be in such a mood. But they happen, across nations and cultures, races and different socio-economic statuses. I bet even Hugh Hefner, J.K. Rowling, and Oprah have bad days. I know Beyoncé has bad days, in fact I’m pretty sure she had a rough one just a couple weeks ago after a certain, um, family issue. Not entirely sure why I chose these four as being pinnacle personas for happy lives, but they can’t have too much to complain about, can they?
As I read on a picture pinned to a Pinterest board called “~Inspiration~” the other day, “It’s just a bad day, not a bad life.” And it’s so true. Sometimes, you just have to endure a crappy day and know in your mind that it is not the end of the world.Â
Sometimes, though, you can escape your mini day of hell. Here are some of the things I do to brighten my mood on such days.
Sing at the top of your lungsÂ
Now, here is one huge perk of being a girl. I suppose it isn’t considered too manly for a dude to get into his car, drive fast, and sing a Natasha Bedingfield song at the top of his lungs. But this seems to be one of the only places gender roles work out in our favor, so I’m not too torn up about it. Sorry guys, I guess you’ll have to try another method. Music cures all though, even if you aren’t singing it.Â
Watch Your Favorite MovieÂ
Movies are, frankly, my favorite things in the universe. And I’m talking movies here, not films. There’s a big difference. Movies are fun and enjoyable and targeted to the masses. Films are well-done, sometimes pretentious, well acted…yada yada yada. Pick a movie, not a film, on your crappy day. Think Dark Night, think Indiana Jones, think Pixar. Personally, I go rom-com, but whatever your own movie-flavor preference may be, get on your comfiest clothes and go for it.Â
B**** About ItÂ
Now, I’m usually not a proponent of complaining for no reason, but sometimes you just need to b****. About the traffic, about how there’s nothing on TV, about Game of Thrones being on break for a week. (I don’t even watch Game of Thrones and I was ticked off by this for my friends and family). Find someone who you love and trust and b**** to them for ten minutes, they won’t abandon you if it goes on for a little longer. Hopefully they’ll say something along the lines of “Ugh. That blows. I still love ya though! Let’s get some fro-yo!” And maybe you’ll feel a teensy bit better.Â
ExerciseÂ
I thought I’d throw a legit, yoga-positivity-blog recommended one in here. While deep breathing and self reflection do nada for me on bad days, working out totally does. Maybe work out and watch a movie at the same time, double whammy. Give those tennis shoes some wear and tear.
While this advice might be a wee bit unconventional, I hope I can at least help one person’s bad day.
