Her Campus Illinois kicked off the summer season this past Sunday by hosting a “Get Fit with Her Campus” event. This philanthropy event raised about $600 for the community crisis center, R.A.C.E.S (Rape, Advocacy, Counseling and Educational Services).
A 60-minute yoga session started the event, followed by an hour-long zumba class. Her Campus Illinois members and guests danced through a tough workout and left feeling refreshed.
But that’s not all guests had in store. They literally went shopping down the aisle, receiving free samples and products from a variety of generous sponsors.
Her Campus received product donations from: Arctic Zero, Bell Plantation PB2, Cellucor, Crunchmaster, Designer Skin Tanning, Gomacro, Good Greens, Mamma Chia, Natures’s Bakery, Nature’s All Foods, Orgain, P28 Foods, Peanut Butter & Co., Quest Nutrition, Two Mom’s in the Raw, Tankabar, Rickaroons, Jimmybar!, and Wai Lana Yoga. Simple Squares, Earth Balance, Ciao Bella Gelato, Daiya, Amara Yoga Studio and City Girl Yogurt also provided coupons and/or gift certificates for Get Fit! guests.
Kathy Ruda, Her Campus event coordinator, said she wanted to show the busy Illini some healthy alternatives to snacks and treats we normally eat on-the-go.
“When choosing which companies to contact with donation requests, I wanted to focus on a wide range of health conscious brands, from high-protein muscle-building foods to products made with only natural, raw and organic ingredients,” Kathy said.
Hayley Eselevsky, Her Campus head editor, said the Arctic Zero ice cream was her favorite treat of the afternoon.
“I really liked the chocolate and vanilla Arctic Zero bars,” Hayley said. “Ice cream is my favorite food, and I normally feel guilty eating it often, but not after eating Arctic Zero bars!”
Kathy also said her favorite products included Orgain shakes and Two Mom’s in the Raw nut bars.
“Because of my own hectic lifestyle, I was really excited to try Orgain’s nutritional shakes, which are perfect for a quick energy boost, as a meal replacement or for a post-workout shake,” Kathy said. “I was amazed at how tasty they were, especially strawberries n’ crème. Each one is packed with 16 grams of organic protein, 24 vitamins and minerals and 10 different fruits and veggies. I was also very really impressed by Two Mom’s in the Raw, a family-owned raw food company. They were very suppportive of our event and even sent me a personalized note wishing us luck at our event!”
After trying a handmade blueberry nut bar, I definitely can’t wait to try some more of their gluten-free snacks. Thankfully they are available at Starbuck’s on campus!”
With great entertainment and snacks, Eselevsky and guests enjoyed the end-of-the-year event.
“I had a really good time doing Zumba,” she said. “The dancing was a lot of fun and such a great workout. This was a great way to end my experience working on the Her Campus Illinois team!”
