Ole Fit: Running/Walking Routes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

Hello Oles!

Are you sick of biking inside or running around a track? Well, spring is finally here and getting some outdoor exercise is on everyone’s minds. While we love being outside, it does get a little boring to continuously run up and down Ole Avenue. Instead of tracing the same routes, consider exploring a new area by trying out one of these routes the next time you exercise outside. Your workout is guaranteed to be more fun!

Carleton’s Arboretum:

My personal favorite spot for running and walking is Carleton’s Arboretum. Our neighbors across the river have a beautiful (and huge) prairie and forest area to explore. While it gets a little muddy in the spring, the Arb is a runner’s paradise for a number of reasons. It’s got a variety of landscapes, plenty of different routes to try and its location  right by the Cannon River keeps it relatively cool. Bonus points if you run around Carleton’s campus afterwards while sporting a St. Olaf tee!

St. Olaf’s Natural Lands:

The natural lands are a closer and smaller version of the Arb’s landscape and beauty. This area, which doubles as the cross country course, also has a variety of loops and routes, so it’s hard to get bored down there. Like the Arb, it also gets a little sloppy in the spring, but the natural beauty makes the wet feet worth it.

Town:

Running through town is really fun! There are many routes throughout the area and lots of blocks to run around. Plus, I guarantee you’ll find a new restaurant or store to try out the next time you’re in town.

Neighborhoods:

Look at all your route options!

Residential areas surround St. Olaf, and the neighborhoods offer the perfect opportunity for exploring. There are plenty of loops and connections to discover, making the neighborhoods of Northfield a fun option for exploring. Pick out your favorite houses along the way if you need extra distraction!

Dirt Roads:

Not many of us venture behind Olaf, but there is a substantial system of dirt roads to run along and cornfields to run beside. This route is best on less windy and cooler days, but the space and beauty makes up for for the dry roads. Bonus points if you can find the family llama farm hidden back there!

With all of these beautiful options for running, there’s no excuse to avoid getting exercise! So get out there, soak up that Vitamin D and get yourself ready for summer!

Stay fit, Oles!
