The Union College Men’s Hockey team is the national champion this year for the first time in Union history! The Dutchmen beat Boston College last Thursday in a nail-biting 5-4 win. Daniel Ciampini recorded three goals on the night, while senior captain, Mat Bodie, and freshman, Mike Vecchione, both had goals. The Dutchmen went on to play Minnesota Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Minnesota’s Justin Stool struck first scoring at the 2:37 mark in the period. About five minutes later Union’s Shayne Gostisbehere responded with a goal of his own. At the end of the first period the score was 4 to 2 Union with goals by Vecchione, Eli Lichenwald, and Ciampini. In the second period there was one goal by Minnesota’s Taylor Cammarata in an effort by Minnesota to try and tie up the game. In the end, however, Union came out on top winning 7-5 with goals scored by Max Novak, Kevin Sullivan, and Bodie.
