The 90s held some of the best fashion trends ever to exist. Remember the super-cool butterfly clips, practical overalls and versatile choker necklaces? This Throwback Thursday take a trip down memory lane as we look back on some of the best fashion trends of the 90s- as told by our favorite 90s girls, the Olsen twins!Â
Butterfly Clips
These ultra-trendy clips came in a variety of colors. They often broke but it didn’t matter because you probably had dozens more stuffed in your bathroom drawers. With butterfly clips it was always the more the merrier. One clip? Nah. Two clips? Meh. A dozen randomly and sporadically clipped across your half-up-half-down hair do? Duh.Â
Tinted Sunglasses
So maybe they didn’t protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays, but who cared about any kind of health safety in the 90s? Not us and not those who rocked the ever-chic tinted sunglasses. Mary Kate and Ashley often wore pink and blue shades but we’d be lying if we said we didn’t have a pair in purple, green and orange, too. Oval shaped tinted sunglasses were a must-have. (And don’t lie, you totally made sure the lense color matched your outfit.)
Bucket Hats
Bucket hats were all the rage. You probably have pictures of yourself as a little girl wearing one on a summer day. You wore one to the beach, you wore one to the mall and you wore one on picture day. Bucket hats with flowers were even more popular. If you need more twin-power evidence, just Google the old ABC show “Sister Sister”. Tia and Tamara were always rocking bucket hats.Â
Hair Scrunchies
There were never enough scrunchies. Scrunchies in pigtails, ponytails, buns, braids and on your wrist “just-in-case”-Â scrunchies were everywhere. Because they were cloth they usually became dirty really quickly. However, this didn’t matter because a dirty scrunchie meant it had a deep history- so you wore it anyway. Now they sell scrunchies at American Apparel, so what does that tell you? Scrunchies. Are. Timeless.Â
Denim Overalls
Overalls for all! Overalls were the best. There were pant overalls, dress overalls and skort overalls. You mostly had them in blue denim but you could have also had them in other colors too. You wore them with big t-shirts, like the one you got from summer camp, but sometimes your mom helped you style a cute blouse underneath. Yeah, overalls were great, but going to the bathroom was always kind of frustrating and awkward. Ugh, the sacrifices we make for fashion.Â
Choker Necklaces
Oh yes, the choker necklaces. You went to Claires or Limited Too and bought them in every color and every style. Maybe they were uncomfortable but they were so stylish that it didn’t even matter. You probably had a plastic rainbow one, a hemp one with colorful beads and a puka shell one.Â
Genie Inspired Outfits
Genies were so hip. No, seriously, don’t you remember? Disney’s Aladdin was released in 1992 and Christina Aguilera’s hit song, Genie in a Bottle, came out in 1999. Genies were super popular in the 90s. You wanted to be Princess Jasmine so you wore goucho pants and dressed up like a genie for Halloween. You also tried to sneak some sort of billowing satin clothing item into every outfit.Â
Bandanas
They made you feel cool and tough when you wore them in colors such as black, navy blue or red. But then you also had them in pink, purple and yellow to match all of your favorite summer shorts. Bandanas were worn Rambo-style and in the traditional sense. They were so cute and you, like, just couldn’t live without them.
