Best Seasonal Activities in Boston

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Boston is a city filled with so many options that it sometimes becomes overwhelming to decide what to do. Whether you are from out of state and want to familiarize yourself with the area or just want fun activities to do with your friends, this article will help you have fun all year round:

Fall:

Don’t feel like Allston crawling on Halloween? Head to Salem! Salem offers lots of cool activities, especially throughout the month of October, including the Haunted Happenings Grand Parade, the annual Witch Ride, and a Witches’ Halloween Ball.

Check out the pretty foliage at Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain. With a warm drink (Dunkin, always Dunkin) in hand it’s the perfect way to spend a crisp fall day.

Attend College Night at the Museum of Fine Arts and Museum of Science in September. Admission is free with a school ID and there are DJs, free food, and lots of cool exhibits and activities—you can even ride a Segway around the MOS for $5! Where else can you do that?

Get a taste of fall by putting some pumpkin in your diet. Some gems include the pumpkin bars from Copley Square’s farmers market, pumpkin lasagna from The Abbey on Beacon St and the pumpkin ravioli from Al Dente in the North End.

Winter:

De-stress from midterms the right way and go ice-skating with your friends at Frog Pond. It is open daily and costs $5 dollars for admission and $9 to rent skates. Ice-skating begins mid-November and ends around March so make sure to go before it’s too late!

Embrace your inner child and go sledding! There are tons of great places to sled in the greater Boston area. Try Flagstaff Hill in Boston Common or Outlook Park on Summit Ave in Brookline—both are close to campus and popular sledding destinations for people in the area.

Stay warm with the hot chocolate from Max Brenner. Located on Boylston St, Max Brenner offers several different kinds of hot chocolate, including Mexican Spicy hot chocolate, Salted Caramel, Swiss Whipped, and more. You can even choose whether you want it to be made with milk, dark, or white chocolate!

Support BU by going to Beanpot! Beanpot is an annual hockey tournament between BU, BC, Northeastern, and Harvard in early February. Put on some scarlett and white and go show some love for your fellow Terriers!

If you can’t contain your excitement for the holidays then check out Faneuil Hall for the Christmas tree lighting ceremony in November. It’s located in Quincy Market and admission is free! There is tons of food, shopping, and music to get you in the holiday spirit.

Spring and Summer:

Go out on the Charles. You can rent canoes and kayaks for around $20 per hour. Kayaks can hold two people and canoes can hold three so make sure to bring friends!

Catch a Sox game. Nothing says Boston like Fenway Park!

Whip out your flower headband and attend Boston Calling Music Festival. It’s a three-day-long concert in May—Friday the 23rd through Sunday the 25th—you can buy individual day passes or passes for the entire weekend. It features bands like Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse, Jack Johnson, Edward Sharpe, and many more—the entire lineup is on their website. Who needs Coachella?

Hit the beach! If you or a friend has a car on campus, take a road trip to Gloucestor or the Cape and spend the entire day next to the ocean. While you’re at the Cape take a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket for a few hours, there are always tons of people to meet on the beach!

Lastly, celebrate Independence Day the right way. If you’re still here in the summer make sure to watch the fireworks and the Boston Pops perform on the 4th of July at the Boston/Cambridge Esplanade.

So many new activities, which season are you now looking forward to?
