Hello, fellow Oles!

We at St. Olaf are blessed with one of the finest cafs in the nation. Between pizza, tacos, salad and grains, there are endless options for every meal of the day. However, while most options are delicious, not all are healthy. If you’re stuck in a meal rut or looking for a healthy option, try out these healthy caf combos!

Veggie Bagel Sandwich:

One of my favorite caf combos is a veggie sandwich on a wheat bagel. This meal is filling, delicious and varied. To make this sandwich, toast a wheat bagel, smear low-fat cream cream cheese on both halves and place tomatoes, lettuce and other veggies of choice between the halves – sometimes I bring snap peas into the caf to put on my sandwich. If you’re looking for a little extra protein, throw on a couple of slices of turkey on!

Salads:

We all know salads are a healthy meal choice.  With the wonderful salad bar we have in the caf, your salad combos are endless. Always put a protein and carbohydrate on your salad to keep your energy up all day. Personally, I like chicken for my protein and brown rice for my carb. Then, top your salad with your favorite veggies and extras! Don’t forget about the goodies on top of the salad bar – goldfish and raisins both taste great on salad.

One quick note – salad dressings are a hugely unrecognized source of calories. Try putting your dressing on the side of your salad rather than directly drenching it. The healthiest (and, in my opinion, tastiest) option for salad dressing is olive oil and balsamic vinegar, so try that out on your next salad!

Greek Yogurt and Chex:

Greek yogurt is a great source of protein. Grab some greek yogurt and pair it with Chex from the grains line and some raspberry jam or some honey and peanut butter, and you’ve got a tasty and healthy combo! Try experimenting with other cereals and toppings in your yogurt! Greek yogurt is great with peaches, granola, oatmeal … the options go on and on!

Grains:

Although this combo is pre-made for you, don’t underestimate the power of the grains line! Grains is both healthy and delicious. While the names and looks may scare off some caf-goers, those who have tried grains know that it is well worth it.

Next time you’re wandering around the caf without a clue of what to eat, try out one of these delicious and healthy caf combos!

Stay fit, Oles!
