Links We Love: International Women’s Day Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Sewanee chapter.

Happy Wednesday, everyone! This week’s Links We Love is special because this Saturday, March 8th, is International Women’s Day! To celebrate the day dedicated to celebrating women, every link this week will be centered around content that can apply to anyone who identifies as a woman, including some funny and serious articles written by women. So enjoy these links and don’t forget to celebrate the wonderful women in your life (including yourself!) this Saturday!

For some background on exactly what International Women’s Day is, check out this website that describes itself as “a global hub for sharing International Women’s Day news, events and resources.” The site includes events, logos to share, and artwork and literature created by women.

Yesterday afternoon, Sabina kicked off a Twitter buzz with women tweeting about their powerful experiences. Some dissenters were quieted quickly, leaving the women and supporters of other genders room to shine. Check out this article for laughs, tears, and empowerment no matter what your religion is!

Pizza Feminism via pizzafeminism.tumblr.com

If you love pizza AND feminism, check out this blog that blends the two beautifully. One example of the content of this blog is, “No woman can call herself free who does not control her own pizza.” – Margaret Sanger. Seriously this blog makes my heart happy.

4 Ways We’re Programmed to Think Women Aren’t Funny via Cracked

Ok so you may have heard the stereotype at some point that men are naturally funnier than women. This article (which includes some profanity, just FYI) explains why that stereotype exists, and there’s actual proof, which sucks, but if we discover the root of the problem we can solve it more easily! Proof women are equally as funny as men below.

19 Things Women Writers Are Sick of Hearing via Buzzfeed

19 women at the Association of Writers and Writing Programs(AWP) Conference were interviewed about insensitive and ignorant things they’ve been asked over the years for no other reason than that they are female authors. Some of these are utterly ridiculous and I have no idea what would possess a person to ask them, but check it out for a laugh/head-shaking moment towards humanity.

That’s it for this week’s Links We Love: International Women’s Day Edition! For this Saturday, try to do something for yourself, your mom, your lady friends, or even a woman who is a stranger. Just take this holiday to express your gratefulness for them as people and equals, and maybe have some chocolate and champagne to celebrate (because let’s face it, chocolate and champagne are always a good idea.) Check back next week for more links and email me at cornwme0@sewanee.edu or leave in the comments ideas about what you’d like to see next week! Happy Wednesday and Happy International Women’s Day, everyone!
