Drink Your Veggies With A Green Smoothie

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at STU (CA) chapter.

When you’re a student on the go, it can be somewhat difficult to maintain healthy eating habits. We’ve all heard the age-old adage that we should eat our vegetables – but what if fitting in all five recommended servings of fruit and veggies a day is inconvenient? Some of us just don’t enjoy eating vegetables, and fitting in the daily recommended intake into our diet just feels like a chore.

Luckily, there’s a solution to your diet woes: you can drink your daily dose of veggies! Though juicing has become a popular health trend, most of us don’t have money to spend on an expensive juicer. Thankfully, a good blender isn’t hard to find.

Smoothies are delicious and are packed with vital antioxidants and nutrients that aid in the maintenance of good overall health. With smoothies, you can add any of your favourite fruits and vegetables and there are endless healthy combinations to make and enjoy.

Green smoothies are an especially good way to fit vegetables into your diet that you wouldn’t eat otherwise. Depending on your own personal preferences, green smoothie ingredients may include romaine or iceburg lettuce, spinach, kale, cucumber, and celery.

But ingredients aren’t limited to the vivid green variety; you can choose any veggie of your liking, including beets, carrots, and tomatoes. The possibilities are endless when it comes to personalizing your smoothie.

To sweeten things up, you can add fruit, berries, or honey to the mix to create unique and fun flavours. For example, frozen blueberries, melon, grapes, oranges, bananas, and apples, will enrich your smoothie with even more essential vitamins as well as improve the taste of your veggie-packed smoothie.

You can also use a fruit juice base for your smoothie such as orange or apple juice as a substitute for water. Coconut water is also a great smoothie base, especially if you’re looking for something high in sweetness but low in calories.  An added bonus – coconut water is great for rehydration when you’re looking for post-workout fuel.

With just a blender and a few wholesome ingredients, you can make living a healthy lifestyle that much easier (and yummier!) for yourself. Who knew that getting your daily recommended serving of veggies could be as easy as one delicious smoothie a day?

My name is Brynn, and my idea of perfection ranges from settling into bed with a cup of tea and a good book or movie, taking a road trip with family on a sunny day, hiking along a nature trail with a canine companion, or just spending time with great friends, because it's not always about what you're doing, but who you're doing it with!
