Emily’s Wednesday Matinee: An Oscar Preview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bentley chapter.

If you are anything like me, this Sunday, March 2, is the day you wait your entire year for. Oscar Sunday is almost upon us, and I cannot think of anything more exciting. Nothing brings me more joy than awards season.  Here is everything you need to know about Oscar Sunday!

1.)    This just may be Leo’s year.

Leonardo DiCaprio has received three previous nominations for his work on Blood Diamond, The Aviator, and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.  However, he has never won. This year he is up for two Oscars for his work on The Wolf of Wall Street: Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role and Best Motion Picture of the Year for he is a named producer. While he is facing some pretty steep competition, I have full faith that Leonardo may finally get the recognition that he deserves. I’m pulling for you Leo!

2.)    This is Matthew McConaughey’s first Oscar nomination.

While we all know the his work in Magic Mike was Oscar worthy, the Academy did not agree. Matthew McConaughey made his debut in Dazed and Confused which came out in 1992. After twenty-two years of acting and amazing roles, such as Amistad, We are Marshall, and The Lincoln Lawyer, this is his first nod from the Academy after his outstanding performance in Dallas Buyers Club.  McConaughey generated a lot of buzz for the film during his preparation for the role. He lost nearly fifty pounds for the role making him almost unrecognizable. Unfortunately he is going head to head with Leonardo, making it a very tough call as to who will win.

3.)    Frozen has been nominated for two Oscars.

Frozen has become a sensation across the country and the world. I cannot even begin to talk about how happy I am that the Academy also understands just how wonderful Frozen is. Frozen has been nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Song for “Let it Go” which Idina Menzel will perform at the Oscars.  Karen O, U2, and Pharell Williams are set to perform their Oscar nominated songs as well. Frozen is up against other animated features, The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Ernest & Celestine, and The Wind Rises.

4.)    Pink will be making a “special appearance” on Oscar Sunday.

While no one is quite sure whether Pink is presenting an award or performing, there is all sorts of buzz surrounding the Academy’s announcement that Pink will be making a “special appearance” at the awards show. Personally, I am hoping that she will be there to perform, but only time will tell, I suppose.

5.)    Bill Murray will be a presenter.

This is the first time that Bill Murray will be presenting an award. Other presenters include Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zac Efron, Emma Watson, Anna Kendrick, Will Smith, Kerry Washington, Jessica Biel, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Find the complete list of presenters here.

You can see the complete list all of the nominations here. Who do you want to win? Will this finally be Leo’s year? Comment below with all of your predictions and make sure to tune into to the Oscars this Sunday starting at 7 P.M on ABC.
