If you’re a fan of Banks, London Grammar, Lorde or The XX, then be sure to check out Broods! Consisting of siblings Caleb and Georgia Nott, ages 21 and 19 (respectively), the duet has been making music together since childhood, although The New Zealand duo wasn’t formed officially until 2013. They released their first single “Bridges” in October of that year, and the track’s success led them to sign with Capitol Records in December of 2013. In response to their success on the New Zealand Top 100 charts, “Bridges” was recently selected as the iTunes Free Single of the Week. Broods released their self-titled 6 track EP on January 30th, 2014. Here’s a little more about it:
- First up on the EP is “Never Gonna Change,” a slow paced track that does a perfect job of giving us a taste of everything to come in the next 5 songs!
- It continues on to “Pretty Thing,” a more upbeat, back-and-forth duet that’s fun to listen to. It does well for itself with a heart felt chorus; “lost in love with you, it’s a pretty thing.”
- Number 3 is “Bridges,” Broods’ first single. The song opens with a soft introduction, but moves into a rhythmic synthetic chorus.
- “Sleep Baby Sleep” mixes in something a little different; best described as a subtle hint of The Civil Wars’ soulful sound blended well with the duo’s own signature electronic feel as an overlay!
- “Taking You There” does its title justice, and takes you somewhere different entirely. Its (mostly) simplistic instrumental background stands alone, without straying too far from the modern synthetic nature of the EP.
- The final song, “Coattails,” makes the perfect closer. It seems as if the siblings make a nod to their rising fame, “so we’ll ride the coattails to the finish line, I don’t hear those church bells chime anymore, ‘cause I’m in love with this.”
Their full-length album is pegged for release in August of this year, and their first American show will be in Hollywood, California on February 24th! They’ll be hitting the east cost on March 3rd with a show in New York, New York.
