Something cool that I just learned: we have a Supreme Court Justice among our list of notable alumni. Harlan Fiske Stone was born in 1872 in Chesterfield, New Hampshire. He went to Amherst High School and then onto Amherst College, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He then attended Columbia Law School, and practiced law in New York City when he graduated. He served at a professor at Columbia Law from 1902 to 1905, and then as a dean from 1910 to 1923. Due to disagreements with the college president, he left his position as dean and joined Sullivan and Cromwell on Wall Street. In 1924, his Amherst buddy president Calvin Coolidge appointed him United States. Attorney General. Make sure to stay in touch with your Amherst friends…

In 1925, Coolidge nominated Stone as a Supreme Court Justice. He became Coolidge’s one appointee. Under Roosevelt, Stone was a huge supporter of the New Deal programs. This earned him Roosevelt’s approval, and Roosevelt appointed him Chief Justice. He served in that position for the rest of his life.

Stone died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1964. His memory, however, lives on at our campus, in the form of Stone, our beloved social. I’m sure that if Stone knew the good times that have been had in the dorm that now bares his name, he would be proud.
