Meatless Montreal: The City’s Best Vegetarian Restaurants

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Let’s be honest, when it comes to the Montreal restaurant scene, meat is predominant. Yet, in the last few years, more and more people have been converting to a vegetarian, vegan or semi-vegetarian diet which leads to the following question: where can one find the best vegetarian restaurants in Montreal? I wish I had the answer to that question a few weeks back when my quest to find a vegan-friendly restaurant that delivered in my area was highly unsuccessful, leaving my vegan guest with no other choice than having a salad. Hopefully, this list of vegetarian restaurantswill  prevent you from ever settling for the only boring meatless option again. The following suggestions are exclusively meat-free, and are so good they might tempt you to make everyday a “Meatless Monday”:

1. The Green Panther

With 3 locations around the city, this vegan restaurant is said to be the home of the best falafels in Montreal. They have a diverse choice of salads, pita sandwiches, smoothies and deserts, and after having tested quite a few, I can assure you the quality of their entire menu is  unaffected by the lack of eggs or dairy.  Added bonus: in the spirit of green living, Green Panther offers bike delivery and packages your meal in eco-containers for takeout.

2. Aux Vivres

Another entirely vegan restaurant, Aux Vivres’ extensive menu is sure to offer something that could please the pickiest of eaters. Veganizing international culinary classics like chilli, gyro and curry, Aux Vivres puts an emphasis on creating healthy yet satisfying dishes. In addition to its regular menu, the restaurant is open for weekend brunch and also offers takout/delivery (through À la Carte Express).

3. ChuChai/ Chuch Bistro

Thai cuisine is often meat-heavy and therefore not a viable option for vegetarians. ChuChai addresses this issue by offering authentic Thai food with a twist: none of the dishes on the menu are made with animal protein or by-products. From the crispy duck to the fish curry, all the “meat” used at ChuChai is vegetarian. The chefs reproduce the texture and appearance of meat so well that it’s easy to confound the fake meat for the real thing.Added bonus: you can rest assured that your experience at ChuChai or Chuch Bistro will be as authentic as it gets, since both owners are passionate about everything Thai, and one of them, Lily Sirikittikul, is actually from Thailand.
