A Weigh In: Rom Coms on V-Day?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

Whether you’re single, dating, or have an unofficial relationship status with that special someone, watching a romantic comedy or “rom com” is never a bad option for a laid back Valentine’s Day. It’ll make you laugh more than you’ll cry; you’re significant other will surely appreciate not having to watch a saddened drama like The Notebook or Titanic; and above all, even if you’re single, you can still get together with a group of friends and have a fun night without the pressure of having a Valentine. Not to mention… a movie night at home can be a cheap alternative to spending major cash on a Friday-night theatre outing!

Below are my top five rom coms to watch this Valentine’s Day:

1. Sex and the City

For a night with the ladies, Sex and The City (the first one!) is a major must-see! Who can deny the fabulous and stylish group of women who dominated the silver screen in 2008? Carrie, Miranda, Scarlett, and Samantha are characters whose personalities are so different that you can even take the time to match their personalities with those of your friends!

2. Hitch

If it’s you and that no-so-serious someone spending Valentine’s Day together, keep it light by watching Hitch starring Will Smith and Eva Mendes! Smith’s crazy antics will keep you and your date laughing the entire time – better yet, the movie doesn’t end with an overly gushy moment, so the awkwardness levels will be kept in check!

3. Think Like a Man

Regardless of who you spend Valentine’s Day with, Steve Harvey’s Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, is a comedy that will have both males and females ROFL all night. More over, if you’ve ever picked up Harvey’s book, you’re sure to find GOOD advice on how to deal with men!

4. Valentine’s Day

The star-studded cast of Valentine’s Day is a pick that no February 14th should be without! While I’m not a huge fan of this movie, who can resist looking at Bradley Cooper, Patrick Dempsey, Ashton Kutcher, (and we can’t forget!) Taylor Lautner. And don’t worry about your guy! While you’re drooling over these hunks, they’ll probably be doing the same over Jessica Alba, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Biel, and Taylor Swift.

5. About Last Night

Lastly, for my die-hard movie goers, About Last Night starring Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Paula Patton, and Regina Hall, opens on Valentine’s Day! Whether you’re spending it as a couple or with your best friend group, this movie is expected to make everyone in the theatre glad they came!

Now that you’ve read about my favorite romantic comedies, what are some of yours? What’s the best romantic comedy to watch this Valentine’s Day? Comment below to weigh in.
