The 9 Best Movies For Single Ladies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Ah, Valentine’s Day – the holiday that began as an international day of spreading love to anyone and everyone has been commercialized into the bane of every single lady’s (and gent’s) existence. Instead of wallowing in your single-ness and secretly (or openly) hating everyone who has a “valentine”, grab yourself some good take out and have a date night: you, your TV, and one of these pro-solo movies.

1. Clueless

AS IF you could refuse a chance to watch everyone’s favorite cult-classic comedy, this lighthearted film will make you laugh ‘til your belly aches and leave you’re cheeks feeling tight from so many smiles. This is the perfect movie for a date night for one or a G.N.I (Girl’s Night In), with its quick one-liners and fashion statements galore. Oh, and the adorable Paul Rudd.

2. Steel Magnolias

Want to feel grateful for your tight group of girls? Watch this tearjerker and feel instantly thankful for your ride or die’s. These southern belles know the first thing about big hair and sticking by your best friends ‘til death do you part.

3. Magic Mike

Even though the script is horrible and the plot is all over the place, Magic Mike has a special place in my heart and comes in handy whenever I’m feeling down in the dumps. Just ignore the wishy-washy dialogue and focus on more important things, like Channing Tatum’s abs and Matthew McConnaughey’s leather chaps.

4. Frozen

Besides having the greatest soundtrack of all time, the leading ladies of Frozen, Anna and Elsa, are perfect examples of never letting a power-hungry man come between the love of your sisters. The entire movie is filled with inspiring music, storylines, and all out girl power—the ideal movie for the single lady in all of us.

5. Gone with the Wind

Two words: Rhett. Butler. Also known as my dream man. End of story. Along with the sentimental storyline of the Old South and Civil War, the whirlwind love triangle of Scarlett O’Hara, Ashley Wilkes and Mr. Butler himself will keep you on the edge of your seat. Get your popcorn ready ladies. This one is an absolute classic.

6. The Notebook

Okay, so it probably shouldn’t be on this list, but it’s just so wonderful and tragic and heartwarming all in one swift movement. Nicholas Sparks can truly do no wrong, but the quintessential star-crossed lovers story like Noah and Allie’s should be reserved for the slightly less bitter single gal.

7. Grease

Leather jackets, hot cars and the greatest sing along of all time? Yes please! This classic musical is an instant mood booster and will cure any valentine-induced woes. So dance around with your besties and embrace your inner Sandy.

8. Ten Things I Hate about You

This modern version of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew will have you rolling on the floor laughing from the witty banter. Watch a young and hunky Heath Ledger pine for the affection of the young Julia Stiles while you eat the Russell Stover chocolates you bought yourself.

9. 500 Days of Summer

Don’t like happy endings? Hate all things lovey dovey? Have a huge girl crush on Zooey Deschanel just like me? If you haven’t heard, 500 Days is the perfect Valentine’s Day flick. Plus Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the main character. Come on, collegiettes, what other reason do you need?

So take this list, buy a bottle of wine, and invite your girls over for a night full of fun…no boys allowed!
