Places to Check Out in Austin This Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Edward's chapter.

Now that school’s back in full swing, you’re bound to need a few ways to unwind and destress. Austin’s got a lot to offer, whatever you’re interested in and no matter your budget. Plus, with the random cold blasts every now and then, you need places that are cold weather friendly.

The Buzz Mill Coffee Shop

Buzz Mill on East Riverside is a 24-hour bar/coffee shop combo boasting locally roasted coffee and homemade infused liquors. On weeknights, the barbeque trailer out back is fired up and there is never a short supply of men with beards in flannel shirts. What’s better than beards and flannel shirts, you ask? Beards, flannel shirts, and s’mores, of course! Now through February 28, you can make s’mores at your table at Buzzmill. They have the Classic, which is an oldie but a goodie, of course, but if you’re more adventurous and have a hankering to try something new, you can order the Cinnamon Toast, Caramel Apple, or Squatch King (banana slices, peanut butter, crumbled smoked bacon, and a toasted marshmallow between two cinnamon graham crackers). Whatever you decide, it’s bound to be delicious and fun to make. So grab your best friends and head on over!

Esther’s Follies

If you need a little pick-me-up, make your way to Esther’s Follies on 6th. A comedy club for all ages, Esther’s has supplied Austin with laughs since 1977. It’s famous for its musical comedy skits, magic, a political satirical revue, and the bustling backdrop of Sixth Street on view through the stage front window. Be warned though, it isn’t for the faint of heart! To get a bigger bang for your buck, you can take your ticket stub next door to The Velveeta Room after the show for free admission to the comedy lounge for more laughs.

Alamo Drafthouse

If you’ve ever been to any of the Alamo Drafthouse’s six Austin locations, then you know that it’s the best place in town to watch a movie. Where else does anyone actually want to get to the theatre early for pre-screening entertainment? The Drafhouse might be known for its “no talking” policies (remember this?), but they throw those out the window for their Action Pack events, which are interactive screenings and cinematic events. Weekly, the theatres screen Quote-alongs and Sing-alongs, and there’s something for everybody! Keep your eye on their website, www. drafhouse.com for a list of upcoming events you won’t want to miss.

One of the reasons Austin is so great is because it’s full of things to do and see. Don’t let the winter blues get you down–get out and try something new!

St Edward's

Brooke Lewis is a senior English Writing & Rhetoric major at St. Edward's University in Austin. She has one left semester left and plans to study journalism in graduate school, after graduation. She also is interning at The Austin American Statesman this semester, for the online department. Brooke has been obsessed with magazines since the 7th grade, when she created one with her friends and distributed it to the girls in her grade. Besides writing, Brooke enjoys playing the piano, hanging out with friends, and watching too much DVR'd television. Some of her favorite shows include Scandal, Nashville, Grey's Anatomy, and the Real Housewives franchise (quality television right there). Brooke is excited to be Co-Editor in Chief of St. Edward's chapter of Her Campus this semester!
