Finals are finally here and for many people, it’s their first time taking finals in college. So, I have a few tips on how to survive the crazy week and successfully make it to winter break.
1. Use the A-LEC.
This is a great way to get free tutoring. The A-LEC has tutors for every subject, so if you are confused you should definitely check it out. They also have a writing center which is a great way to get your papers edited. For all final papers, I suggest writing them and then taking them to the Writing Center to get looked at again. The tutors are able to fix any mistakes you may have and check that you are fulfilling the assignment. The appointments only take about thirty minutes and this extra step takes your paper from good to great. All you have to do is call the A-LEC and schedule an appointment and you’re good to go.
2. Go to different libraries.
During finals, it’s really hard to find a place to study in Fondren. Since it is the main library, many students are there during all hours of the day, so you spend a lot of time looking for a seat than actually studying. There are other libraries on campus to go to. Bridwell is liked by many students, but isn’t as well known as Fondren, so it’s a great library to go to. There is also the library in Meadows School of the Arts which is also well liked by those who go there. If you don’t like complete silence, try going to Hughes Trigg. I have studied in there before and it’s a great way to get out of the library atmosphere. Also, places like Panera and Starbucks are great places to study because you can get food as well.
3. Go to bed early!
During finals you can see the library full at 2 in the morning. While it is necessary to study, sleep in necessary as well. Make sure to plan study time accordingly and make sure you get plenty of sleep. All of the studying is a waste when you’re not fully awake for the test. And although coffee is a great way to stay awake, it is not meant to pull an all-nighter. So, to be fully prepared study, but also make sure to be well rested.
4. Use Self-Control.
If you have a Mac, you should definitely get this app for your computer. You can choose websites to block, or block the internet completely for a set period of time. It’s a great way to not get distracted while studying. This is great if you tend to procrastinate.
5. Exercise.
Make sure to exercise during finals week. This is a great way to relieve finals stress and take a break from studying. Dedman is open during finals week and many students go for a study break. Also, if you want to get outside, walk around the Katy Trail. Anything active can help to get rid of stress and take your mind off of finals.
When you’re done with finals make sure to use Textbook Valet. They buy back books for great prices and they will come pick them up from you wherever you are! www.textbookvalet.com
