Some of the Durham events we’re most excited about this Christmas…
Durham City Traditional Christmas Festival
When? Friday 6th – Sunday 8th December from 10am to 5pm.
Where? Palace Green, Castle & Cathedral grounds
If you need something to get you into the Christmas spirit – look no further than the Durham Christmas Festival. With hundreds of stalls in the Craft & Gift Marquee on Palace Green, and yummy Christmas treats from the Local Food Producers set-up in the Cathedral Cloisters, this is the perfect way to start the Christmas season!
Her Campus recommends: meeting the live reindeer in the Castle grounds!
DUOS Chamber Orchestra Winter Concert
When? Saturday December 7th at 4.00pm
Where? Elvet Methodist Church
After a day of exploring the Christmas market, allow for a little culture in the afternoon. Head over to the Elvet Methodist Church to hear the prestigious Durham University Chamber Orchestra in concert. With a programme including Debussy’s L’Après Midi and Ravel’s Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte, the afternoon promises to provide high-quality and varied entertainment for all.
Her Campus recommends: the glittering Nielsen’s flute concerto, featuring soloist Becky Durose from St Chad’s.

Durham University Annual Cathedral Carol Service
When? Monday December 9th at 7.00pm.
Where? Durham Cathedral
Be prepared to start queuing early! Doors open at 6.45pm for this outrageously popular event, put on by the Durham Inter-Collegiate Christian Union. Enjoy an evening of carols with a talk by Adrian Holloway, and make the most of the post-service mince pies & mulled wine provided by the majority of Durham colleges.
Her Campus recommends: courageously attempting all the descants – you know you want to!
Durham University Big Band present A Jazzy Christmas
When? Wednesday 11th December from 8.00pm to 11.00pm
Where? Riverside Bar and Café, Durham Students’ Union
Fresh from their sell out gig at Matt and Phreds in Manchester, Durham University Big Band present an evening of swing, funk, and cool jazz. Featuring jazz reworkings of all your Christmas favourites, as well as classic big band charts. The band promises to get you swinging into the Christmas spirit!
Entry is free, but there will be collections on behalf of Durham Foodbank throughout the night.
Her Campus recommends: Coming prepared to give to Durham Foodbank – this charity provides nutritionally balanced meals to over 1100 people in crisis every month throughout County Durham. When you have no financial safety net, a sudden crisis such as bereavement, benefit delay, redundancy or illness, can leave you unable to feed yourself or family. Durham Foodbank needs your support more than ever – so share a little Christmas joy this winter!
