Pinterest Cocktails on Foster: An Effortless Classic

A few weeks ago, I wrote an article for Her Campus chronicling the woes of not owning a smartphone (which you can read here).

This semester while writing for Her Campus, I became aware of another drawback to not owning a smartphone: I can’t take my own pictures. This means that when I make my cocktails, I have to rely on a friend being around to lend me his/her phone. This week, it turned out my schedule didn’t coordinate with anyone else’s so I had to rely on Google images for reference in the article. Technical troubles aside, this week’s cocktail – the classic daiquiri – turned out pretty good! I got the idea when a roommate mentioned to me a while ago how much she enjoyed them when she went on spring break to the Bahamas last year. Daiquiris might be considered more of a summer drink, but the way my roommate raved about them made me decide to try them anyways!

The Ingredients:

Makes 6 drinks:

  • 1 cup dark rum (though I used white and it turned out fine!)
  • Âľ cups lime juice
  • ½ cup sugar

 

Directions:

In a pan bring ½ cup sugar and ½ cup water to a boil, then reduce the heat and bring to a simmer until all the sugar is dissolved (about 3-5 minutes). The Food Network calls this “sugar syrup” as opposed to “simple syrup” because it has a 1:1 ratio of water and sugar (versus a 1:2 ratio of sugar and water in simple syrup).

While you allow the simple syrup to cool, start squeezing the limes. If you are making a larger batch and don’t feel like squeezing a million limes, then feel free to buy lime juice at the store. However, if you’re making just a drink or two for yourself, then invest the time to squeeze your own limes. The taste is much more sweet and distinct.

The daiquiri is tangy, clean, and refreshing. No wonder this drink is such a classic, no strawberries needed! Even though it may traditionally be a summertime drink, this drink has stuck around because it’s able to transcend seasons.
