Alessa Esparza
Age? 19
Major? Theater Studies: Acting
Year of graduation? 2016
Where are you from? Lima, Peru (South America)
Hobbies? I love writing, especially poems or short stories, and I’m also into slam poetry. I enjoy reading a great book in the beach, swimming in the ocean, or going snow skiing in Argentina. I also love watching artsy and mind-blowing films, like Pedro Almodóvar’s.
Favorite part about Boston? Taking walks during fall or spring around the Commons and to the Charles River – it’s so beautiful!
Favorite part about Emerson? The vibrant energy of its students – everyone is always doing or going somewhere with ideas, drive and enthusiasm. I love the positive and supportive attitude of my classmates. I always enjoy going to every class, because our teachers are knowledgeable, open-minded, talented and passionate, as well as the students.
What do you plan to do after you graduate? I would love to stay in Boston and work in the theater, as well as in other creative projects. I’m also looking into the L.A program that Emerson offers and seeing the possibility of staying there. My dream is to grow as a person and artist here, and offer my passion, dedication to the craft and my diverse cultural background/mindset to the work. Eventually, I want to also go back to my country to make contributions to the development of theater there.
What are you working on right now that you’re super excited about? This past Monday I was a part of the thrilling experience of performing “Cyclops: A Satyr Play” (directed by the talented James Blaszko) at the Oberon, after about two months of rehearsals. It was an honor to be a part of such an enthusiastic, dedicated and talented cast and crew! Not only was it a blast, but it was also gratifying to see the audience’s enthusiastic response to the show. Personally, I’m working on my slam poetry and the possibility of performing my poems in the near future.
How do you feel about Boston winter? I still love the clear and light-blue sky of Boston and the fact that the sun sometimes decides to come out, but what kills me is the cold wind! I’m eager for the Common to be covered in snow and I want to go ice-skating, too, but I’m not looking forward to how cold it’s going to get.
What is your favorite holiday food? For Christmas, I love my grandmother’s hot chocolate and all the delicious desserts!
What are your plans for the upcoming holidays? I’m visiting one of my very best friends in California. I’m so excited to see her, to be in California for the first time and to have my first real Thanksgiving celebration.
What is your favorite holiday movie? How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Home Alone are always fun to watch.
