This week on Foster has been full of sniffles and sneezes, but that doesn’t mean we’ve been stuck in our beds the whole time. To have a little fun, and also improve our health, we made Hot Honey Lemon with Vodka. According to our landlord, Mario, honey and cinnamon are the two best ingredients for curing just about anything. He swears by them for keeping him from getting colds and alleviating his back pain. In fact, he printed out a thirty page document from his computer for us to read about the benefits of the two foods. I was skeptical of Mario’s claims, but it certainly felt like the drink helped me out of my cold, if even just a little bit.
This Week: Hot Honey Lemon with Vodka, courtesy of Global Table Adventure
The Ingredients:
Makes 1 quart:
- ½ cup honey (1 super big squeeze)
- 4 cups water
- 1 lemon, zested and sliced
- 1-2 cinnamon sticks (or 7 shakes of cinnamon)
- Vodka, to taste
To make this cocktail, add the honey, lemon zest, and cinnamon sticks to a pot on the stove. To zest the lemon college-style, use a cheese grater or even a carrot grater.
Then, turn the heat on low, cover, and let the mixture simmer for 30-45 minutes. The concoction may not look too tasty, but soon the kitchen will soon start to smell like pure comfort.
When the pot is done simmering, let it stand for a minute, then pour into mugs or (carefully!) into a glass. Slice up the lemon you zested into wheels and add them to the drink. Enjoy!
Overall, the drink had a mild lemony flavor. The warmth combined with the cinnamon makes it taste comforting and the lemon gives the immune system a boost. It was perfectly fine to drink, but it certainly didn’t knock our socks off flavor wise. Ultimately, it tasted similar to a nice hot cup of lemon tea.
