You’ve probably seen (and heard) this week’s Campus Cutie leading large tour groups around campus with his charming British accent. Russell Hay took some time out of his busy schedule to sit down with us and tell us a little bit about his favorite Yale memories, favorite spots on campus and what it’s like to be a Yalie from across the pond!

Favorite Party theme: Librarians and Barbarians
Starbucks order: Tea, definitely, Vanilla rooibos Tea – How British!
Favorite Movie: Black Hawk Down or Pirates of the Caribbean, but for the girls out there, I’d definitely say The Notebook
Favorite TV Show: I’m not really a TV person. I’d rather go for a run or go to the gym.
Relationship status: Single!
HC: What organizations are you involved in on campus?
RH: I’m a Tour Guide, I am involved in Sig Ep, and I am involved with the Yale Radio, I’m a DJ.
HC: What’s your radio show like?
RH: I do a joint show with JHut, (another campus cutie, Jeremy Hutton ’15) its called Bangers and Mash on Wednesdays at 9. It’s like a pre-woads destination, getting you amped for Woads.
HC: Bangers and Mash?
RH: Yeah, we’ve yet to decide who’s who.
HC: What are your plans for Thanksgiving break?
RH: I’m going to my grandma’s house. She’s always hilarious; you’d be surprised how hard an 84-year-old grandmother can go. We party until the break of dawn. There has even been an occasional game of pong.
HC: Who is your celebrity crush?
RH: Orlando Bloom… I’m just kidding! Mila Kunis.
HC: Favorite spot on campus?
RH: Probably some of the roofs. Unnamed roofs…to keep them secret.
HC: Where can we find you on a Saturday night?
RH: I have two very different types of Saturday nights. One of them is just hanging out with my suitemates in our common room until really, really late at night. Just hanging out chatting that sort of thing. Other type is going out, big fan of Sig Ep, obviously, and Sig Nu is a lot of fun. Toads if I’m feeling adventurous.
HC: Any embarrassing moments at Yale?
RH: Last week, I slipped on a tomato in the Calhoun dining hall and pulled my hamstring. Enough said.
HC: How would your parents describe you?
RH: Their favorite of their three children.
HC: What’s it like going to school with a sibling?
RH: I love it. Viv and I are in the same college. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do that when I came. But it turned out to be a really good decision. We see as much of each other as we want, but despite being in the same college we don’t run into each other that much, so we still have to schedule time to see each other. On Saturday morning we get up nice and early and go to the gym to pump iron as a family.
HC: How would she describe you?
RH: She would describe me as the baby of the family. I mean I am the baby of the family, but I very much embrace that role and my sisters know that.
HC: How is New Haven different from your hometown?
RH: They all speak with accents here. And it’s colder.
HC: What’s your best pick up line?
RH: I’ve always been famously bad at pick up lines. Usually I just try to talk and say anything and that normally works the best it could possibly work. It’s all about the accent. Some of the most fun I have on this campus is convincing you Americans that half the stuff I say is actually said in England when most of the time I’m just making stuff up.
HC: What’s the most romantic thing you’ve done for a girl?
RH: One time I took someone up to East Rock and sat there and watched the sun go down, in New Haven’s romantically polluted skyline. Wanna watch the sunset…that’s a pretty good pick up line!
HC: What do you like most in a girl?
RH: Sense of humor, smart, willing to call me out on my bad jokes, ability to banter back. That’s probably key.
HC: Any advice for girls at Yale?
RH: Not really, keep doing what your doing.
HC: Finally, Yale girls are the best because… they know it but don’t flaunt it.
