How to Dress for Going Out in Chilly Pittsburgh

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

As the semester moves along at the speed of light, the weather is changing just as fast. It sometimes seems that we skipped the season of fall all together and moved right into winter. By now, I’m sure that everyone has pushed their denim shorts and t-shirts to the back of their closets and replaced them with leggings and sweaters. It seems fairly easy to transition to warmer clothing for going to class, but what about at night? Outfits for the nighttime are usually associated with wearing less. However, this is also a time that the temperature drops compared to during the day. That being said, is there a way to dress for going out while still looking cute and managing to stay warm without having to bundle up from head to toe? I think so.

High-Waisted Everything

Pants are probably a smarter alternative to the usual dresses and skirts. High-waisted jeans are a great choice compared to the typical pair of jeans. There is no way you can go wrong with a classic dark-wash high-waisted pair of jeans. You can literally find them anywhere! You can even mix it up a little bit and invest in a black or colored pair- they come in every color of the rainbow. If jeans aren’t your thing, high-waisted leggings are always an option as well.

Keep it Cropped

If you are a fan of crop tops and don’t want to put them away for the winter, have no fear! I’m here to tell you that you can still rock the crop top in the dead of winter if you so desire. Take your favorite crop top from summer and pair it with an oversized cardigan. Or, try a long sleeved crop top like this one from Forever 21 ($9.80). Not only will it keep you warm, but the faux leather also gives the top an edgy feel. I have the same one in black and I’m obsessed! Paired with high-waisted pants, you’ll look great and be warm.

No Pants? No Problem

If pants just aren’t your thing, and you can’t let go of the thought of not wearing a dress out, try to opt for a quarter length or long-sleeved dress. This will keep you warmer compared to typical sleeveless dresses; all while still looking cute. This one from Forever 21 is a great option ($22.80). I just bought a similar one and cannot wait to wear it with my faux fur vest!

Staying Warm from Head to Toe

Shoes are obviously an important factor when it comes to completing your look. Though heels seem to be the shoe of choice when going out, try pairing a chic pair of booties with your outfit. Not only will your look appear more appropriate for the change of season, but it’s also a more sensible shoe choice. I like to pair my booties with neutral colored socks that show a little bit out of the top of the boot. That way, my look appears more season-oriented and I’m staying warm!
