Freshman Blog: My Overhyped Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Captain Underpants heroically saving the party from lack of cute boys, and the campus being overrun by Miley look-a-likes can only mean one thing: Halloween. (Dunh…dunh…duuunnnnhhhhh and cue dramatic organ music)

One simple word instills so much anticipation and preparation into the minds of young, eager college students. Between barn dances and midterms, October was one whole month of looking forward to this one day – or so I thought.

See, unlike high school Halloween where there is maybe a party or two, college Halloween is one big weekend of craziness. But dare I say, in reality, it was a little overhyped. Let me make my case.

The days leading up to the 31st were a jumble of stressing out about a costume that was cute but funny, different but not dumb. My schoolwork definitely suffered from detachment during this time, as my friends and I sat in the tech lab researching costume ideas on Pinterest and all other websites that contained the word “Halloween.” During the course of the week, I probably made a few enemies from my constant pestering questions of should I be this or should I be that?

Over-excessive? My God yes, but I definitely thought it was necessary. After days of deliberation, I finally decided on a cat burglar. I went for cute with a little black dress, tights and boots. Sexy factor be darned because Champaign is cold and nobody is telling the truth if they say they’re fine baring arms and legs while wandering from party to party.

My costume made its debut on Halloween night with a second appearance the Friday after.

The nights were spent hopping from party to party, watching girls desperately seek someone’s attention at one moment and then struggle to break free of a groping grasp the next. Going into the party details is non-essential because even after being here for close to two months, they are all basically the same. Yes, some are more fun than others, but overall, as a non-Greek, I’m still struggling to tell all the Greek letters apart. And so our late hours were spent fielding texts about parties and debating which ones to attend.

Though overhyped, my first college Halloween was nonetheless extremely fun. With the days of trick or treating over, Halloween really becomes a different holiday for college students. However, it’s one that I’ve found a new joy for and can’t wait until next year!

College! Can anything be more exciting! Born and raised on the southside of Chicago, I went to high school in the city so coming to the middle of the cornfields is a big change, but one I am very excited for. When I’m not busy stressing about school, I enjoy reading, having crazy adventures with friends, and just living to the fullest. (Insert one of my numerous favorite Pintrest quotes here) Fresh out of high school, I’m ready to report on all things collegiate and take you along my wild and sure to be bumpy road that is freshman year!
