Collegiettes, meet Caleb Joyce, a senior, Communications Media major with a focus in promotions and advertising who is “a little more than obsessed with bacon” and likes listening to epic soundtracks from movies when writing creatively. Caleb, also known as Dubby of Team Loko, is one of the artists performing at this weekend’s WIUP FM show “The Underground Live,” which features some of the best local talent.
Caleb has been interested in music since the fourth grade, when he started writing his own, which he describes as a “mix of new age and rap.” Although he started writing music in 4th grade, his passion really ignited his 7th grade year, when he joined an AU basketball team.
“I was the only white guy on the team. All the guys on my team really liked hip hop and rap and I was around them a lot, so I caught onto it. I started experimenting with writing hip hop stuff and I’d practice rapping with my teammates. They would make fun of me, but it was still a lot of fun,” explained Caleb. His freshman year of high school, it was obvious that all of that practice had paid off because, as part of a group, Caleb started to record professionally for the first time. However, during his freshman year of college, he decided to become a solo act and he recorded with Full Tilt Productions in Mechanicsburg, PA.
Caleb cites Limp Bizkit and Lil’ Wayne as early inspirations for his music. He says that they both brought new things to the table and their styles had never been heard before when they entered the music world. A more recent inspiration is Big Sean. Caleb had the opportunity to meet him last summer when he opened his concert. He recounted this experience saying, “He was just so humble. He’s a big name and yet he was so gracious. He thanked us for opening and told us that we did a great job. I loved that. His music is also really positive, which I think is cool.”
As a Senior, Joyce is preparing to graduate. He’s hoping to get an internship this summer with really any brand, but he hopes it will be with a university or a sports team. He likes the idea of being a part of something bigger.
His plans after finishing his internship? “I’m gonna work a ton! I don’t care if it’s two stupid jobs that I’m working doubles at, I’m definitely going to be working.” He hopes to save up enough money to move out of his parents’ house and get focused on what he wants to do and where he wants to go. There is one thing that is for sure about his future though: music. “I’m not giving up on my music, I’m going to keep pushing and working hard”.
