For college students without means of transportation, most of your basic needs, toothpaste, facial cleaner and toilet paper, can be met by CVS. But what about those days when you need a pick-me-up? Where do you take your parents when they come to town? When you’re looking for that one-of-a-kind birthday gift, where do you go? Over the past few years, Uptown Normal has truly blossomed in a beautiful and unique part of town. With continual improvements, it’s hard to keep track of everything Uptown has to offer. I spent some time in Uptown this week to give you an insider’s look at what’s happening.
The brand new cheesecake bakery, That’s So Sweet, cut their ribbon less than a month ago and has truly made an entrance. Every time I walk past their delicate and colorful storefront, it is filled with customers looking to satisfy their sweet tooth. They have taken cheesecake to the next level with unbelievable flavors. Flavors right now include Andes Mint, Reese’s Pieces, Blueberry Streusel, Salted Caramel, S’more and Birthday Cake!Â
Worried about committing to just one flavor? You won’t have to because they come in the form of mini cupcakes! Tammy Olsen, senior public relations major at ISU, said, “I love the idea of selling bite size cheesecakes so you can sample multiple favors.”
The next restaurant, Medici, is not new on the block but recently revamped its menu in October. Chef Jeremiah explained the new items are heavier because of the colder temperatures rolling in. Some of the new dishes include an Asian Chicken Salad, Teriyaki Turkey Burger, Spaghetti Squash Bolognaise, Snakebite Pork Chop and more. Each of the new items has been thoughtfully crafted and packed with flavor and zest!Â
When your parents come to visit, impress them with your great taste in restaurants by taking them here. With new lunch and dinner specials everyday, it is almost impossible to try everything. Not to mention their amazing selection of beer and signature cocktails, dining at Medici is always an exceptional experience.
And with the holidays approaching fast, don’t wait until the last minute to buy presents for the special people in your life. The Garlic Press and Market CafĂ© are full of unique gifts, home dĂ©cor and cute cooking utensils. You can help support local artists by purchasing handmade cards or pieces of jewelry. They also offer cooking classes for those who are still eating Ramen Noodles for every meal.Â
My personal favorite items at The Garlic Press are their darling “thank you” cards. Any young professional should always have these on hand to tell a teacher how much you appreciate a letter of recommendation or to make a lasting impression on an employer.Â
To make finding these places simple, all three are located on North Street. Outstanding establishments such as these are hard to come by. It feels great to help local businesses and it won’t leave your wallet empty. I highly encourage every student to take a stroll through Uptown and see what you discover!
