Year: Junior
Major: Broadcast Journalism
Organization: Impact 89 FM and Big Ten Network
Your Role at the Impact: I’m a DJ and the Sports News Director
A little bit about The Impact…
The Impact has been the MSU Student Radio Station since 1989. It is a Alternative-College Rock Format
What made you get involved with The Impact:
I met the program director and station manager at different Welcome Week events my freshman year, and they seemed like fun people, as well as I wanted broadcasting experience.
What does it take to be apart of the radio station?
All you have to do is fill out an application, pass an air check after a few weeks on the training station, and you’re in!
What responsibilities come with your position?
As a DJ, playing music, going on the air and making bad jokes (or at least that’s what I do), take requests, and give prizes away.
As the sports news director, I oversee the entire sports news department (along with my co-director Michael Higer), and am also one of the editors.
3 Reason you Love The Impact:
The people that I work with, talking with all of the people on the request line, and the excitement people have when I give prizes to them.
Favorite moment working there:
That’s a hard question because it’s hard to pick just one…I would have to say that it was the day that I got 15 requests, as it meant people were listening to me!
Other campus activities you’re involved with:
I’m working for Big Ten Network StudentU as a general staff member, and as a softball play-by-play announcer. BTN StudentU is an organization that streams college sports for the Big Ten Digital Network, and it is produced, directed, and announced by students.
Favorite campus sport:
Football, but basketball is a VERY close second.
Where could you most likely be found on campus:
Most likely the ComArts building, as most of my classes are there.
Fun fact about yourself:
I’ve also anchored election coverage for the MSU school of journalism! Election day 2012 was a 14 hour day for me. It was exhausting but a great experience!
