Have you ever been getting ready for a night out with your girls and your hair just isn’t working the way it should? No matter what you do, it doesn’t look right. You’re going for something like this:
And it turns out like this:
Your plan to impress that cute guy from the bar last weekend seems to be going up in flames. You find yourself wondering: do guys really think about it that much? Do they care at all? Well I’m here to answer that question with the help of a few guy pals. Please note: a lot of Google image searching was done mid-interview to explain what these styles actually look like.
For going out on the weekends:
Up or down?
Boy 1: “You have more options with your hair down, but if you can pull it off then wear it up.”
Boy 2: “Down.”
Boy 3: “Down.”
Boy 4: “Down. When you put your hair up I feel like you’re trying to mask it because you think it looks bad.
Curly or straight?
Boy 1: “Straight.”
Boy 2: “Generally straight.”
Boy 3: “Straight.”
Boy 4: “With curly hair you look like you’re a more fun person.”
Half pony?
Boy 1: “That sounds weird…that seems like a mullet.”
Boy 2: “Yea I like that.”
Boy 3: “In some cases, but it depends who’s wearing it.”
Boy 4: “It doesn’t look good. Don’t do it.”
Hair accessories? (bows, headbands, etc.)
Boy 1: “If you don’t overdo it. Sometimes a flower or something can be cute, but otherwise it kind of seems like you’re trying too hard.”
Boy 2: “Headbands are alright, but bows are just weird. Dolls have bows in their hair, teenagers shouldn’t.”
Boy 3: “Bows are cute, headbands if it works with the outfit.”
Boy 4: “I don’t like them, this isn’t high school anymore.”
“The poof?”
Boy 1: “A poofed ponytail is okay, but not a huge fan otherwise.”
Boy 2: “I don’t care if it’s moderate, but if you clearly have a Bump-It in then no.”
Boy 3: “F*** the poof.”
Boy 4: “I don’t get it. I don’t think it looks very good.”
For class/studying:
Up or down?
Boy 1: “It’s got to be up.”
Boy 2: “If I was a girl I would have to imagine up because it would be easier.”
Boy 3: “Up.”
Boy 4: “Up.”
Braid?
Boy 1: “I think that’s fine.”
Boy 2: “I guess I don’t mind it.”
Boy 3: “French braid is cute.”
Boy 4: “That sounds like a lot of effort.”
Sock bun?
Boy 1: “I don’t know if I like that. If you’re going to class or the library, why wouldn’t you put in the minimal amount of work?”
Boy 2: “I don’t care, I guess it probably looks good.”
Boy 3: “No.”
Boy 4: “No, they look weird.”
Messy bun?
Boy 1: “That’s nice…better than the sock bun for sure.”
Boy 2: “Yea I like messy buns.”
Boy 3: “Messy bun is cute.”
Boy 4: “That looks good, it looks like you didn’t put a lot of effort into it. No one likes those people who look like they tried really hard for class.”
Baseball hats?
Boy 1: “It’s fine, I’m not judging you for it but I think you could just as easily do a ponytail.”
Boy 2: “I don’t know…they’re clearly trying to hide a bad hair day. Some girls can pull it off, some can’t.”
Boy 3: “I love baseball hats. I’m a baseball hat guy.”
Boy 4: “They look strange on a girl, but not bad. Some guys like them.”
Hair accessories? (bows, headbands, etc.)
Boy 1: “A headband would be more than acceptable.”
Boy 2: “Not bows. Headbands are okay.”
Boy 3: “Headbands are okay if they’re an athletic one. Not a cute one, you’re trying to impress someone and you don’t need to impress anybody when you’re studying.”
Boy 4: “Never.”
“The poof?”
Boy 1: “No. Why would you put that much effort into it? If I were waiting for you and you did that, I would say that isn’t worth it.”
Boy 2: “Again, you clearly spend way too much time trying to look good. You should be spending more time studying and enhancing your knowledge.”
Boy 3: “F*** the poof everywhere.”
Boy 4: “No. Just no.”
Well, there you have it Collegiettes: a glimpse into the male mind. The moral of the story? You might want to re-think the Snooki-esque poof you have planned for this weekend… I completely understand what boys are thinking now, don’t you?
