As Halloween draws closer and invitations to various club events and house parties begin to flood our inboxes and clog up our news feeds, our attention turns to what on earth we’re going to wear. Here at Her Campus we’re getting a little tired of recycling our same old vampire teeth and cape, so have decided to get inventive by taking inspiration from our favourite ‘Mean Girls’ characters.

It’s always difficult to decide whether to go all out scary or play it a little safer. Poor unsuspecting Cady didn’t realise this was even a choice to be made, and we can’t help but think she really works the zombie bride, or ‘ex-wife’ look. If you want to show a similar level of commitment to your Halloween costume, we would recommend paying a visit to some local charity shops. They’re bound to have something you can use as the main piece to your outfit, whether it’s an actual wedding dress like Cady’s or something you can get creative with. That way you can get an authentic feeling to your costume without breaking your budget.

If you wanted to avoid a risky costume, we’d recommend getting your hands on a LWT (little white dress) and roughing it up a little with some red paint. Add some white netting to flow down from your alice band like a veil and… voila! You now have your very own wearable zombie bride costume.

As explained by Cady, “Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it. The hardcore girls just wear lingerie and some form of animal ears.” So, there you have it, if in the wake of having to wave goodbye to SSB you’re looking for an opportunity to show off your much worked-for bod, perhaps Halloween is your chance. Just head on down to H&M or Primark to pick up some flashy lingerie, and then onto Accessorize or John Lewis for those all-important fluffy animal ears.

If the animal idea appeals to you but you’d rather not do it with quite so much skin on show then that’s super easy too. Just suss out the general colour of your animal and pick up some clothes that match it. So, for a mouse, a brown or cream skirt and top would do the trick, and then just pick up those ever-useful animal ears. The problem with this type of costume is that you’re in danger of looking like you haven’t made much of an effort. Her Campus believe accessorising can be the answer to many a problem, and this situation is no different. Why don’t you pay a visit to the local fancy dress store to pick up some stick on whiskers, or animal eye contacts, to give your outfit that extra special something to show you’ve put some real thought into it?

We hope that helps you lovely ladies decide what to wear, and we look forward to seeing all your ‘Mean Girls’ inspired costumes this Halloween.

Olivia Wilkerson is a third year Business Economics student and is very excited to take up her role as Fashion and Beauty Deputy Editor of Her Campus Exeter this year! Alongside her degree, she loves catching up with the latest trends by reading numerous magazines and blogs and uses this as inspiration for her own fashion and fitness blog which she has recently started. Fitness is important to her, so you may see her down the local gym working a sweat or at the local health food store (there's a great one on Well Street!) buying lots of lovely treats! This summer, Olivia will be going to the South of France to relax and scout out the St Tropez style icons as well as braving the potentially incredibly muddy fields of Glastonbury! As she is studying Spanish as part of her degree, she is also aiming to undertake an intensive course in Barcelona for a week, before returning to Exeter to study hard for third year! She hopes that working for Her Campus Exeter will allow her to meet lots of wonderful like-minded girls and to further develop HCX to make it the best it can be.
