It’s Family Weekend! All that really means that there are a variety of activities around campus and Richmond that are not only fun for college students, but also their families. From VCU sponsored events to local festivals, it is going to be a busy weekend in Richmond.
Richmond Folk Festival
From traditional folk musicians to ballet dancers, the Folk Festival is an event that is fun for all crowds. Located right on the James River front on Brown’s Island and close to the Governor’s Mansion, it is sure to please all age groups. According to the site, it has been voted “the best music festival in Virginia” for the past two years — definitely something to check out! The event is free.
Rocky Horror Picture Show
The most exciting of all the events planned is probably the Rocky Horror Picture Show. One of Richmond’s very own Rocky Horror casts will perform live outside in the Commons Plaza. The first 300 students will receive props. What are they? You just have to show up to find out. Plus, you can’t go wrong with Rocky Horror.
Richmond City Tour
VCU is offering an hour long tour of Richmond. It is a great way to show your family Richmond as well as see parts of Richmond that you have yet to visit. Snacks will be provided.
Carytown
Carytown is a mile of shops and restaurants that are sure to keep you and your family occupied for hours. Check out the fair trade items at Ten Thousand Villages, have a bite to eat at Portrait House or catch a $2 film at the Byrd Theatre.
Men’s & Women’s Soccer
Fall weather is the perfect time to enjoy a game of soccer. Now’s your chance to learn the fight song and chants with the pep band before basketball season comes around. Take your family or even a group of friends to support the Rams as they take on their opponents on the home field on Friday. The women’s team will play at 5 p.m. v. Fordham and the men’s team (ranked #4 by the NSCAA!) will play at 7:30 p.m. v. Massachusetts. All games are free for students and $7 for adults.
Cabell Library Tour
If your family is just dying to see inside of Cabell Library, now’s their chance! Your parents want to think that you spend the majority of your time studying in the library so point out your “favorite” spots and your parents will leave happy.
Family Friendly, College Approved Movies
Pixar’s Monster’s University and Despicable Me 2 will be shown on Friday and Saturday in the Commons Theater. Both movies are free and a good way to spend quality time with your family or friends.
Cary Street Gym Open House
To us it is just our gym, but many others find the newly renovated and expanded sports center to be quite impressive. Cary Street Gym will waive the guest fee during Family Weekend for guests of VCU students.
