The quintessential college experience doesn’t exist. Sure, television and movies have engrained images of awesome house parties and boring professors into the minds of millions, but that’s not the whole picture. Every student wants to have a unique four years of higher education. Even at our small college, we have a vast array of majors, activities, and sports that allow different life paths to develop. Quite simply, college can be whatever you make it.
However, we shouldn’t ignore the common bonds we share as Wesleyan bobcats. If you’re going to milk Wesleyan for all that it’s worth, it’s good to cover all bases. How about a bucket list?
- Take a Picture in Front of the Chapel
Wesleyan is known for its beautiful chapel. Get a snapshot in front of this landmark! It’s also a great backdrop for an annual picture with friends or for those graduation memories. Bonus points if you pose with John Wesley!
- Play in the Fountain
Skip putting bubbly detergent in the fountain and take advantage of some free fun instead. On a warm, sunny day, running through the water with friends is a great break from school stress and the heat.
- Late Night Trip to the Donut Shop
Let’s face it—Buckhannon doesn’t have much “late night entertainment,” but college students are always hungry, and a homemade donut or pepperoni roll can satisfy both food and fun. Head toward the train tracks and grab a treat!
- Attend Jump and Spring Sing
Regardless of your Greek Life affiliation, watching some of the events that are unique to our school is a blast. Jump is a welcoming of new members to the fraternities and sororities, and it takes place in the Quad outside Doney Hall. While the ladies chant and strut, the men catapult their new members from the ground up onto the landing. High-flying stunts are also part of Spring Sing, which is held in the Chapel. This night of musical skits is the last event in spring Greek Week competition, and it always has a fun theme!
- Attend a Bobcat Entertainment Event
Two words, Collegiettes: Big Bingo. Bobcat Entertainment (BE) holds a bunch of fun campus events, but Bingo is by far the most popular. Why? Well, for one thing, you can win big prizes. Televisions, computers, iPads, Keurigs, and more can be up for grabs on any given night. Grandma’s basket of fruit has nothing on these treasures, so take a study break and hit up an event sponsored by BE!
- Go to Founder’s Day Convocation
Freshmen are usually forced to attend this ceremony, and upperclassmen choose to skip it. However, this short celebration of our college includes great speakers and beautiful music. It’s a tradition on campus, and professors cancel 11 A.M. classes for that Friday. Join the celebration of rich history and tradition at Wesleyan.
- Paint “The Rock”
The large boulder rests at the intersection of the Chapel, Reemsnyder, and English Annex. Organizations take to this grey canvas with paint, decorating it with logos and words. Here’s the catch, though: the Rock has to be guarded and protected until the wee hours of the morning. Otherwise, someone else could come along and write over the design. It’s half-art project, half-all-nighter. Now that’s a rockin’ combination!
- Learn Our School Song
Regardless of singing ability, knowing “Home Among the Hills” garners a deeper connection between you and our school.
- Eat Late Night Breakfast
Teachers and professors serve up pancakes or other snacks during the night of Reading Day, or the day before finals. It keeps you fueled with energy for studying and serves as last-minute bonding time with friends before the semester ends.
- Celebrate “Wesleyan Wednesday”
Safely, of course, dear Collegiettes. However, sometimes a relaxed and fun weeknight is the only way to keep sane with a busy schedule. Finish homework during the day, grab a group of friends, and enjoy the night!
