Last semester, Her Campus Merrimack College featured J. Lucky Henry as Campus Celebrity, a young entrepreneur making his way into the business world.Â
Lucky came up with an idea in November of last year that will make you say, “Why didn’t I think of that?” He realized that businesses didn’t care about making prices more affordable for college students, so instead he created a competitive market where businesses create deals that are available to the everyday college student.Â
To make this dream come true, Lucky gave up his 2012 winter break to dedicate long hours to create a pitch for MV Sandbox Campus Catalyst to receive funding, in case you were wondering he was one of the fortunate students that did. Not just once, but now twice Lucky has received grants from MV Sandbox to fund projects.Â
From these grants, Lucky has built from the ground up CollegePower Inc, a growing business that thrives on enhancing student life at universities. Lucky believes, “As a college student, one should never pay retail.”Â
In the first phase of launching CollegePower, the main focus was on retail needs for students with discounts on Chipotle, alcohol, and froyo being the most popular. These discounts were provided to students through the means of a “couplet,” which is a cleverly named coupon booklet that could be purchased by students for just $1-, yes … I typed that correctly, one dollar. In spring semester, another couplet was produced with double the deals for the same price! How can you beat that? And to make things a whole lot easier, a mobile application is expected to launch this fall, so be sure to follow their twitter and facebook pages for updates.
CollegePower Inc. does not stop there! There has been an expansion on the company. Owner of DJT1 Entertainment, Dan Taliaferro, convinced Lucky to expand into the entertainment business. Within a few weeks of launch, their first event was hosted at Augie’s Pub of Merrimack College at full capacity. The fall already looks to be busy for CollegePower Entertainment TM, several parties are booked, including a fashion show in Rhode Island. A list of performances is on the website www.collegepower.us.Â
